The St. Boniface Cathedral is a staple of the Winnipeg skyline, and it is rich in local history. The first French Catholic church in this spot was built in 1818, on 25 acres of land set aside by Lord Selkirk. Father Provencher was the first leader of the Catholic parish in Red River, and when he was appointed bishop, the St. Boniface church became a cathedral.

The current façade you see on the cathedral was built in 1905 by Archbishop Langevin. It was the largest and most elaborate Roman Catholic cathedral in Western Canada, and the best example of French Romanesque architecture in Manitoba. On July 22nd, 1968, a fire destroyed the cathedral, leaving only the stone facade you see today. A new cathedral building was built inside the ruins of the old one, and was blessed in 1972. This is the current church building you can see inside the ruins.
The history of the French Catholic parish is intricately intertwined with the history of the Red River settlement and of Winnipeg. The cemetery on the grounds of the cathedral is a testament to the major historical figures associated with the church. One of the major figures in the establishment of the province of Manitoba, Louis Riel, is interred here. Find his grave in the middle of a circle of stones near De la Cathédrale street.

- Find Louis Riel’s grave stone. What is written on the west face of it? (The first five lines will do.)
- What is the name of one person interred in this cemetery who passed away in 1897? (You can find this answer in the first rows of headstones along the center path, but any person anywhere in the cemetery is fine. It is a hard date to find, but there *are* a couple more obvious ones. I found four when hiding.)
- Post a photo with your log of yourself, or your GPS, or a piece of paper with your caching name on it, in front of the cathedral’s façade.

La façade actuelle de la cathédrale fût construite en 1905 par l’archevêque Langevin. Ce fût le plus grand édifice religieux de tout l’Ouest canadien, et le meilleur exemple d’architecture romanesque française au Manitoba. Le 22 juillet 1968, un incendie a détruit la cathédrale, laissant que la façade en pierre que vous voyez aujourd’hui.
