Geocache Description:

Slotsholmen

DK:

(English text and example pictures for the log below)

Attention: Water level can be high, so the "Might require wading" attribute is meant seriously!

UK:

In the middleages Silkeborg had a castle (slot).

The castle was situated on a little wedge of land near Remstrup Å, as Gudenåen is called right here, where it flows out into Silkeborg Langsø.
When the Drewsen brothers built their paper mill and Silkeborg finally became a real town the last remnants of the castle had vanished a long time ago. The new owner of the paper mill N. C. Strøyberg had, with help from the Danish National Museum, the remnants of the castle excavated in 1880-1882 and Silkeborg hereby got a part of its early history back.

The oldest remnants of a castle facility that has been found dates back to the year 1385.
At that time, in the middle of the islet, there was a sturdy tower. Despite having a tower it was not a big castle, even at that time. It is believed that the footprint of the entire building complex was a mere 30 square meters.
In the 1510's the "Det Store Stenhus - The Big Stone House" build on the islet. This was separated from the larger buildings on the "mainland" by a broad moat.
After the reformation, in 1536, Silkeborg Castle became the administrative center for Silkeborg County, which in size was roughly equivalent to the modern Silkeborg county.
King Christian III used "The Big Stone House" as his residence when he visited Silkeborg.
Between 1600 and 1650 the castle was occupied by the Swedish several times during the Swedish wars. The Sweds did not treat the castle well and when they left it was no longer suited for living in, and repears would be too costly.
In 1726 the last remnants of the "The Big Stone House" was torn down.
A part of a frieze from "The Big Stone House" can still be found on Slotsholmen!

To log this cache you must solve a little task and upload a picture in your log:

29-08-2024: The information sign has been changed so the task has changed also! On the information sign near GZ you will find 2 specific years. One under "Welcome to Silkeborg Castle" in the top left corner and another one in the section "The manor Silkeborg Hovedgård" near the bottom to the right.
Find the sum of the two years ( = XXXX ) and send an e-mail to slotsholmenXXXX@gmail.com and remember to write your geo-name in the subject field! If you don't get an answer and you are sure the answers are correct, try to put something in the text field in the mail also.

When you receive an e-mail telling you that you have solved the task correctly you may log the cache, but remember the log must include a picture that is taken somewhere on Slotsholmen and:

1. Includes a sign with your geo-name and has the "Paper Tower" in the background
2. Is a selfie with you and you have the "Paper Tower" in the background
3. IS a photo where you hold your GPS device and the "Paper Tower" is visible in the background.

Logs without a valid picture will be deleted!
