How Geocaching Works

Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions in our disclaimer.

Geocache Description:

Located adjacent to NSA Headquarters, the National Cryptologic Museum houses thousands of artifacts that collectively serve to sustain the history of the cryptologic profession. Here visitors can catch a glimpse of some of the most dramatic moments in the history of American cryptology: the people who devoted their lives to cryptology and national defense, the machines and devices they developed, the techniques they used, and the places where they worked. For the visitor, some events in American and world history may take on a new meaning. For the cryptologic professional, it is an opportunity to absorb the heritage of the profession.

In order to log this cache, you'll need to send me three answers and post one picture.  Enjoy!

1.

Locate the "HALL OF HONOR". Send me the name of the cryptanalyst whose name anagrams to:

 GREMLIN CODE SLAYERS

2.

Locate Hitler's Enigma inside a display case. Note the setting numbers of the three rotors.

Find one of the two working German Enigma Machines that you may physically try, set the rotors to the three numbers you pulled and send me the following word after you decode it:

FFUVP

3.

Locate the exhibit with artifacts used by Native American Code Talkers.  You’ll find a display containing a notepad.  Decode: poo-ee-whee-tay-kwop

Find the poo-ee-whee-tay-kwop hidden inside a briefcase.  Send me the function of the switch to the right of the ENCRYPT knob.

 4.

Post a picture of yourself (or a piece of paper with your caching name) with anything you find interesting inside the museum.  If you are struggling to find any of these things, there are plenty of knowledgeable docents who can help you out!
