The Way of the Martyr
Prešovská Kalvária bola vybudovaná v 18. storočí pôsobením jezuitov v období rekatolizácie z iniciatívy Spolku umierajúceho Krista. Tvorí ju 14 barokových kaplniek, Kostol sv. Kríža, kaplnka Svätých schodov, katakomby a priľahlý cintorín. S výstavbou prvých sakrálnych objektov sa začalo v roku 1720.

Celý komplex Kalvárie bol dostavaný až v roku 1893. Barokový kostol sv. Kríža postavili na Kalvárii v roku 1753. Stavbu viedol František Perger, ktorý staval tiež Kalváriu v Banskej Štiavnici. Nástenné maľby sú dielom prešovského maliara Ondreja Trtinu. V kostole sv. Kríža vytvoril barokový priestor, ktorý využitím farieb a svetla opticky pôsobí oveľa väčším dojmom než akým je reálne. Nad oltárom sú tri kríže a sochy Panny Márie, Márie magdalény a sv.Jána apoštola. Ku kostolíku boli v roku 1766 po oboch stranách pristavené dve bočné kaplnky. Z juhu- Božského srdca a zo severu- Božského hrobu. V roku 1767 postavili pod múrom stojacu dvojpodlažnú kaplnku a plastikou „Ecce homo!“. Organ inštalovali 1768. V kostole sú tri zvony, z r. 1752, 1774 a 1824. Kostol slávnostne vysvätili aj s celým dovtedy stojacim komplexom Kalvárie 14.9.1769.

From the South-Divine Heart and from the North-Divine Grave. In 1767 they built a two-storey chapel and a sculpture "Ecce homo!" Under the wall. Organ installed 1768. In the church are three bells, from r. 1752, 1774 and 1824. The church was solemnly consecrated with the whole Calvary complex still standing on September 14, 1769.
Ku kostolíku boli boli v roku 1766 po oboch stranách pristavené dve kaplnky. Z juhu kaplnka Božského srdca a zo severu kaplnka Božského hrobu. Organ inštalovali v roku 1768. Na Kalvárii sa nachádzajú aj katakomby. Postavené boli v roku 1836 a slúžili ako hrobka pre kňazov. Ich múr pri pohľade z mesta vytvára dojem hradieb. Prístupnosť pre verejnosť je v súčasnosti po dohode - infocentrum Prešov.
Všetky kaplnky krížovej cesty, okrem kaplnky Svätých schodov, majú podobný tvar a to štítové priečelie, zdobené ornamentami, erbom donátora (aspoň čiastočne sú zachované erby: Dessewffy - II. zastavenie, Szirmay - VIII. a XI. zastavenia, Barkóczi - zrejme X. zastavenie, Klobušický - XII. zastavenie, mesto Prešov - XIV. zastavenie) a polkruhovito zaklenutým vstupným portálom. Ochranné mreže kaplniek sú bohato zdobené.

The protective grilles of the chapels are richly decorated.
Kaplnka Svätých schodov bola postavená r. 1765 podľa vzoru kaplnky Sancta Scala pri Lateránskom kostole v Ríme a dalo ju postaviť z vďačnosti mestu za poskytnutie azylu po nútenom úteku z Poľska, litovské knieža Karol II. Radziwill. V priečelí nad vchodom do tejto kaplnky umiestnili kniežací erb. Interiér vypĺňa 28 schodov, oltár s kamennou plastikou Piety a nástenné maľby od Ondreja Trtinu.

Prešovská kalvária, v minulosti považovaná za druhú najkrajšiu v celom Uhorsku hneď po banskoštiavnickej, sa nachádza na suradniciach ikony v príjemnom prostredí nevysokého vŕšku okraji mesta.

Calvary is a very nice place for a small trip or a walk as well as for spiritual meditation. In addition to beautiful surroundings and valuable architecture, the visitor also has an excellent view of the city.
Kalvária predstavuje veľmi pekné miesto na malý výlet či prechádzku, ako aj na duchovné rozjímanie. Okrem krásneho prostredia a hodnotnej architektúry tu na návštevníka čaká aj vynikajúci výhľad na mesto.
