Best

In 2019 was het 200 jaar geleden dat Best een zelfstandige gemeente werd. Een relatief jonge gemeente dus, maar dat wil niet zeggen dat er geen historie is.

Uit opgravingen in de Aarlese Heide blijkt dat de eerste bewoners reeds rond 1700 voor Christus op Bests grondgebied woonden. Andere vondsten stammen uit de Keltische cultuur zoals de Germaanse urnen uit de la Tene cultuur van 500 voor Christus. Bij één van de grafheuvels werd een vorm aangetroffen die sterk deed denken aan de aanleg van Keltische tempeltjes. In een andere grafheuvel werden vormen en tradities uit de oudere bronstijd van 1700-800 voor Christus ontdekt.

Best maakte tot 1819 deel uit van de gemeente Oirschot. Na de afscheiding heeft Best zich ontwikkeld van een overwegend agrarische gemeente tot een industriële gemeente.

Sint-Odulphus

De patroonheilige van Best is Sint-Odulphus. Zijn levensloop is nauw verweven met de folklore en traditie van Best. De eerste documenten omtrent de Odulphusverering in Best dateren uit 1421. Het vroegste jaartal dat in verband kan worden gebracht met de verering van Odulphus is 1150. In een brief van omstreeks 1480 wordt vermeld dat de relieken van Sint-Odulphus in 1150 werden verplaatst. Een legende verhaalt dat de heilige op jonge leeftijd, nog in opleiding zijnde in Oirschot, ooit een prijs is misgelopen en toen twijfelde aan zijn vermogen om de opleiding af te maken. Op weg naar huis ontmoette hij een engel die hem een gouden appel gaf, waarop zijn zelfvertrouwen weer terugkeerde. De betreffende akker werd Odulphusakker genoemd.

Momenteel prijkt Sint-Odulphus op het gemeentewapen van Best. Ook het plaatselijke schuttersgilde is naar de heilige vernoemd. Een standbeeld van Sint-Odulphus is in Best te vinden voor de Sint-Odulphuskerk. Deze kerk is gebouwd tussen 1880 en 1886. De kerk staat op de plaats waar naar verluidt Sint-Odulphus geboren zou zijn.

Deze virtual start bij het standbeeld van Sint-Odulphus. Daarna bezoek je nog enkele andere plekken in de directe omgeving die op de een of andere manier verbonden zijn met deze heilige. Op elke plek zul je een opdracht moeten vervullen.

De waypoints

WP1: Het standbeeld
N 51° 30.700' E 5° 23.480' Dit standbeeld is afkomstig uit het parochiehuis uit 1902, dat in 1963 werd gesloopt. Odulphus is een echte Bestse heilige die hier in ca. 775 is geboren. Na zijn priesterwijding werd hij pastoor in Oirschot. Hij verbleef ook in een klooster in Utrecht en heeft gewerkt als missionaris in Friesland. Ook was hij 10 jaar hulpbisschop in Utrecht als vervanger van bisschop Fredericus. Op 12 juni 865 stierf Odulphus. Op grond van zijn vroom en heilig leven is hij heilig verklaard. Sint-Odulphus wordt vaak afgebeeld met een appel in zijn hand. Voer hier opdrachten 1 en 2 uit.
WP2: De kerk
N 51° 30.694' E 5° 23.476' De Sint-Odulphuskerk is een neogotische kerk uit 1880-1886 naar een ontwerp van de Duitse archiect Carl Weber. In 1882 werd de nieuwe Sint-Odulphuskerk ingewijd. Men wilde eerst de toren van de oude kerk handhaven, maar deze was naar verhouding te klein. In 1884 werd de nieuwe toren gebouwd, maar daarmee was de oorspronkelijke historische kerk verdwenen. De Sint-Odulphuskerk werd zwaar beschadigd tijdens een beschieting door de Duitse bezetter op 17 oktober 1944. In 1960 was de kerktoren weer hersteld en nadien vonden nog een aantal restauratieprojecten van de kerk plaats. Voer hier opdracht 3 uit.
WP3: De pastorie
N 51° 30.702' E 5° 23.463' Vroeger stond de pastorie van de parochie in wat nu Nieuwstraat heet. In 1855 werd een nieuwe, grotere pastorie gebouwd vlakbij de kerk. Dat is nog steeds de huidige pastorie. Deze pastorie was in 1856 gereed. In 1911 is de pastorie aan beide zijden uitgebreid met een vleugel. Voer hier opdracht 4 uit.
WP4: Prinsenhof
N 51° 30.664' E 5° 23.418' Tegenwoordig is Prinsenhof in gebruik als zalencentrum. Oorspronkelijk werd het gebouwd als patronaat. De naam is afgeleid van de grondlegger van dit patronaat: Pastoor B. Prinsen. Er werden in het patronaat voor voornamelijk het mannelijke deel van de bevolking activiteiten georganiseerd. De R.K. geestelijkheid wilde zo het verenigingsleven bevorderen en er tevens toezicht op houden. Voer hier opdracht 5 uit.
WP5: Het kerkhof
N 51° 30.626' E 5° 23.479' Nadat het vroegere kerkhof te klein werd werd door het kerkbestuur een akker aangekocht om een nieuw kerkhof aan te leggen. Dit was in 1872 gereed. Door de parochianen werden twee beelden geschonken. Deze beelden stellen Sint Jozef voor, en natuurlijk Sint-Odulphus. De beelden werden in 1875 geplaatst bij de ingang van het kerkhof. Vanaf het punt waar je nu staat zijn deze beelden goed te zien. Voer hier opdracht 6 uit.
WP6: De kapel
N 51° 30.678' E 5° 23.530' In 1864 vestigde de zustercongregatie "Dochter van Maria en Jospeh" zich in Best. Zij namen intrek in de oude burgemeesterswoning. In de daarop volgende jaren werd het kloostercomplex uitgebreid. In 1922 werd deze kapel toegevoegd. De naam is Sint-Odulphuskapel, maar in Best wordt de kapel nog vaak "zusterskapelleke" genoemd. Voer hier opdracht 7 uit.
WP7: Huize Nazareth
N 51° 30.711' E 5° 23.520' Je staat nu op de plek waar in 1864 de zustercongregatie "Dochter van Maria en Jospeh" zich vestigde. Behalve dat de zusters hun intrek namen in de oude burgemeesterswoning kregen zij ook de oude openbare school ter beschikking. Hier gaven zij onderwijs aan meisjes. Wegens gebrek aan religieuzen kwam er in 1973 een einde aan de onderwijsactiviteiten van de zusters. Ook de ouderenzorg werd afgebouwd. Het kloostercomplex werd gesloopt met uitzondering van de kapel en het uit 1917 daterende deel van het klooster. Voer hier opdracht 8 uit.

De opdrachten

De gevraagde gegevens zijn, behalve die van opdracht 7, te vinden op bruine informatiebordjes aan of naast het object dat je bezoekt. Alle bordjes zijn ondertekend met "Stichting Geschiedenis van Best" en "Gemeente Best". Die tekst telt nooit mee voor de vraagstelling.

• WP1: Het standbeeld
  opdracht 1: Maak bij het standbeeld van Sint-Odulphus een foto van jezelf, je team, je mascotte of gps met dit beeld en plaats deze bij je log. Je hoeft niet herkenbaar op de foto te staan, maar dit zou wel leuk zijn.
  opdracht 2: Stapeltel de woordwaarde van het laatste woord (in de tekst) op het informatiebord (de ondertekening "Stichting Geschiedenis van Best" en "Gemeente Best" hierbij dus negeren!). De gevonden waarde is A.
• WP2: De kerk
  opdracht 3: Stapeltel alle jaartallen in de tekst op het informatiebord. De gevonden waarde is B.
• WP3: De pastorie
  opdracht 4: Wat werd er volgens het informatiebord van Piet van den Boom gekocht om de pastorie te kunnen bouwen (één woord)? Stapeltel de woordwaarde daarvan. De gevonden waarde is C.
• WP4: Prinsenhof
  opdracht 5: Als wat werd volgens het informatiebord Prinsenhof tot medio 1962 gebruikt als gevolg van een gebeurtenis uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog (één woord)? Stapeltel de woordwaarde. De gevonden waarde is D.
• WP5: Het kerkhof
  opdracht 6: Wat werd volgens het informatiebord voor gezamenlijk rekening van de parochie en de gemeente gebouwd (één woord)? Stapeltel de woordwaarde. De gevonden waarde is E.
• WP6: De kapel
  opdracht 7: Sint-Odulphus wordt vaak met een appel afgebeeld. Hoeveel "gouden" appels zijn aanwezig boven de ingang van de kapel? De gevonden waarde is F.
• WP7: Huize Nazareth
  opdracht 8: Hier zie je naast het informatiebord een plattegrond van het voormalig klooster. Daarop is de kapel waar je zojuist bent geweest aangegeven met een nummer. Wat is dat nummer? De gevonden waarde is G.

Hoewel het natuurlijk lastig is te bepalen wie als eerste een virtual heeft gevonden (wellicht stuurt niet iedereen de mail meteen na het voltooien van de opdrachten), heb ik aan de hand van de volgorde van binnenkomst van de mailtjes een "podium" samengesteld.

Best

In 2019, it was 200 years since Best became an independent municipality. A relatively young municipality, but that does not mean that there is no history.

Excavations in the Aarlese Heide show that the first inhabitants were already living on Best's territory around 1700 BC. Other finds date from Celtic culture such as the Germanic urns from the la Tene culture from 500 BC. At one of the burial mounds a shape was found that strongly reminded of the construction of Celtic temples. In another burial mound, forms and traditions from the older Bronze Age of 1700-800 BC were discovered.

Best was part of the municipality of Oirschot until 1819. After the separation, Best has developed from a predominantly agricultural municipality into an industrial municipality.

Saint-Odulphus

The patron saint of Best is Saint-Odulphus. His life is closely intertwined with the folklore and tradition of Best. The first documents concerning the worship of Odulphus in Best date from 1421. The earliest year that can be associated with the worship of Odulphus is 1150. A letter from around 1480 states that the relics of Saint-Odulphus were relocated in 1150. A legend tells that the saint at a young age, still in training in Oirschot, once missed a prize and then doubted his ability to finish the education. On the way home he met an angel who gave him a golden apple, on which his confidence returned. The field in question was called Odulphusakker.

Saint-Odulphus is currently displayed on the municipal coat of arms of Best. The local archers' guild is also named after the saint. A statue of Saint-Odulphus can be found in Best in front of the Saint-Odulphuschurch. This church was built between 1880 and 1886. The church stands on the place where allegedly Saint-Odulphus was born.

This virtual starts at the statue of Saint-Odulphus. Then you visit some other places in the immediate area that are somehow connected to this saint. You will have to fulfill an assignment at every location.

The waypoints

WP1: The statue
N 51° 30.700' E 5° 23.480' This statue comes from the parish house from 1902, which was demolished in 1963. Odulphus is a true Best Saint who was born here in around 775. After his ordination, he became a pastor in Oirschot. He also stayed in a monastery in Utrecht and worked as a missionary in Friesland. He was also assistant bishop in Utrecht for 10 years, replacing Bishop Fredericus. Odulphus died on 12 June 865. He was declared a saint on the basis of his devout and holy life. Saint-Odulphus is often depicted with an apple in his hand. Perform assignments 1 and 2 here.
WP2: The church
N 51° 30.694' E 5° 23.476' The Saint-Odulphus Church is a neo-gothic church from 1880-1886 after a design by the German architect Carl Weber. In 1882 the new Saint-Odulphus church was consecrated. They first wanted to maintain the tower of the old church, but it was relatively small. The new tower was built in 1884, but the original historic church had disappeared. The Saint-Odulphus church was badly damaged during a bombardment by the German occupier on October 17, 1944. In 1960 the church tower was restored and a number of church restoration projects took place afterwards. Perform assignment 3 here.
WP3: The parsonage
N 51° 30.702' E 5° 23.463' The parish rectory used to be in what is now called Nieuwstraat. In 1855 a new, larger parsonage was built near the church. That is still the current rectory. This rectory was ready in 1856. In 1911 the parsonage was expanded on both sides with a wing. Perform assignment 4 here.
WP4: Prinsenhof
N 51° 30.664' E 5° 23.418' Today, Prinsenhof is used as a conference center. Originally it was built as a patronage. The name is derived from the founder of this patronage: Pastor B. Prinsen. Activities were mainly organized for the male part of the population in the patronage. The R.K. clergy wanted to promote and monitor association life. Perform assignment 5 here.
WP5: The graveyard
N 51° 30.626' E 5° 23.479' After the former graveyard became too small, a field was purchased by the church board to construct a new graveyard. This was finished in 1872. Two images were donated by the parishioners. These images represent Saint Joseph, and of course Saint Odulphus. The statues were placed at the entrance of the cemetery in 1875. From the point where you are now, these images are clearly visible. Perform assignment 6 here.
WP6: The chapel
N 51° 30.678' E 5° 23.530' In 1864 the sister congregation "Daughter of Mary and Jospeh" settled in Best. They moved into the old mayor's residence. The monastery complex was expanded in the following years. This chapel was added in 1922. The name is Saint Odulphus Chapel, but in Best the chapel is often called "sister chapel". Perform assignment 7 here.
WP7: House Nazareth
N 51° 30.711' E 5° 23.520' You are now at the place where the sister congregation "Daughter of Mary and Jospeh" settled in 1864. In addition to moving into the old mayor's residence, the sisters also received the old public school. Here they taught girls. Due to the lack of religious people, the educational activities of the sisters came to an end in 1973. Elderly care was also phased out. The monastery complex was demolished with the exception of the chapel and the part of the monastery dating from 1917. Perform assignment 8 here.
