La Basilica Superiore si trova a 1200 metri di quota. E' una costruzione imponente grazie alla grande cupola che la rende allo stesso tempo in armonia con le alte montagne circostanti e in lieve contrasto con la dimensione spirituale raccolta della Basilica Antica.
L'esigenza di costruire una nuova chiesa più grande, considerato l'elevato numero di pellegrini che si recano in preghiera al Santuario, venne avvertita sin dal XVII secolo. Sul finire dell'Ottocento, venne scelto il progetto dell'architetto Ignazio Amedeo Galletti (1726-1791), elaborato un secolo prima, e, proseguendo lo sviluppo del Santuario verso Nord, venne deviato il torrente Oropa per disporre dello spazio necessario alla nuova costruzione.

Posata la prima pietra nel 1885, i lavori proseguirono con molta difficoltà attraverso le due guerre mondiali, coinvolgendo numerosi consulenti tecnici. I lavori cominciarono a rilento per gli aspri contrasti sulle modalità di procedere, tanto che nel 1898, a tredici anni dall'avvio del cantiere, la costruzione era ancora ampiamente incompleta.

Con l'inizio del secolo i lavori ripresero fervore con l'obiettivo di completare la facciata ed erigere la grande cupola entro il 29 agosto 1920 in occasione del quarto centenario dell'incoronazione della statua della Madonna. Il programma non venne rispettato, anche per lo scoppio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, e il giorno della celebrazione la basilica si presentava con la sola facciata pressoché ultimata.

Negli anni successivi, ci fu una lunga interruzione dei lavori che durò quindici anni e portò la costruzione a diventare un rudere ancor prima di essere completata. Nel 1936 i lavori ripresero con la revisione del progetto.

La costruzione della cupola maggiore iniziò nel 1938 e fu completata nel 1941. La cupola, sebbene più bassa del progetto originario, si eleva a oltre 80 m dal pavimento, e rende imponente il monumento. La chiesa fu consacrata nel 1960, ma di fatto l'edificio non fu mai ultimato.

Al momento della pubblicazione di questo listing (2019) sono in corso dei lavori di restauro della basilica che dovrebbero concludersi nel 2020 in occasione del quinto centenario dell'incoronazione della statua della Madonna.
La basilica superiore, grazie alla sua imponente cupola rende, visibile il santuario dalla pianura a molti chilometri di distanza e si integra bene con il paesaggio e tra le montagne.
Affinché il log sia valido deve contenere due fotografie della cupola con i seguenti requisiti:
1. Dal waypoint A alle coordinate date (troverete un cerchio di pietra per terra) la fotografia deve inquadrare solo la cupola.
2. Dal waypoint B la fotografia deve contenere oltre alla cupola un biglietto con il vostro nome oppure un oggetto personale o un segno di riconoscimento.
Altre fotografie opzionali sono:
3. Da un qualunque posto a piacere nei pressi della basilica (siate fantasiosi!).
4. Da un posto lontano almeno 400 metri dalle coordinate del listing e ad una quota superiore alla cupola (ci sono molte possibilità: a piedi, in bicicletta, in moto, in auto, in funivia).

The Upper Basilica is located at an altitude of 1200 meters. It is an imposing building thanks to the large dome that makes it at the same time in harmony with the surrounding high mountains and in slight contrast with the spiritual dimension of the Ancient Basilica.
The need to build a new larger church, considered the huge number of pilgrims who go to the Shrine to pray, was warned since the seventeenth century. Towards the end of the 19th century, the project of the architect Ignazio Amedeo Galletti (1726-1791) was drawn up, developed a century earlier, and, continuing the development of the Sanctuary towards the North, the Oropa stream was diverted to provide the space needed for the new construction.

The building started in 1885, the work continued with great difficulties through the two World Wars, involving many technical consultants. The works began at a slow pace due to the contrasts over how to proceed, so much so that in 1898, thirteen years after the construction works began, the building was still largely incomplete.

With the beginning of the century the works resumed fervor with the aim of completing the façade and erecting the great dome by August 29, 1920 on the occasion of the fourth centenary of the coronation of the statue of the Madonna. The program was not respected, even for the outbreak of the First World War, and on the day of the celebration the basilica appeared with the façade almost completed only.

In the following years, there was a long interruption of the works that lasted fifteen years. The interruption led the building to become a ruin even before it was completed. In 1936 the work resumed with a revised project.

The construction of the main dome began in 1938 and was completed in 1941. The dome, although lower than the original project, it rises to over 80 m from the floor, and makes the monument imposing. The church was consecrated in 1960, but in fact the building was never completed.

At the time of publication of this listing (2019) a restoration of the basilica is taking place; the works should be completed in 2020 on the occasion of the fifth centenary of the coronation of the statue of the Madonna.
The Upper Basilica, thanks to its imposing dome makes the sanctuary visible from the plain to many kilometers away integrating well with the landscape between the mountains.
A valid log must contain two photographs of the dome with the following requisites:
1. From the waypoint A at the posted coordinates (you will find a stone circle on the ground) the photo must only frame the dome.
2. From the waypoint B the photograph must contain, in addition to the dome, a ticket with your name or a personal object or a sign of recognition.

3. From a place of your choice near the basilica (be imaginative!).
4. From a place of your choice at least 400 meters away from the coordinates of the listing and at a higher altitude than the dome (there are many possibilities: on foot, by bicycle, by motorcycle, by car, by cableway).

IMPORTANT: the two photographs of waypoints A and B described above are mandatory, any other photo does not make the log valid. Logs that do not meet the requirements will be deleted without notice.
