Sorolla by the sea Virtual Cache

This Virtual cache is dedicated to the Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla (1863–1923). He was one of the most prominent figures in the Spanish painting and one of the grandmasters of Impressionism in the world.

Sorolla was a “poet” of light and colour. The Levantine painter raised the city of Valencia to new heights dedicating much of his work to it. Many of his paintings show places around this city.

Sorolla captured like no one else the reflection of the sun in the Mediterranean Sea. The artist spent summer seasons in a house in the Cabañal neighborhood, near La Malvarrosa Beach. This beach was the chosen location in many of his canvases: Playa de Valencia con luz matinal (Beach of Valencia by Morning Light), El pescador (The fisherman), Corriendo por la playa (Running along the beach), among others.





But if we had to choose one of his creations, this would be Las tres velas (The Three Candles), where he pays homage to the hard life for the women of his time in the fishing world: hardworking and in charge of raising children at the same time.



Particular attention must be given also to one of his masterpieces: The return from fishing (La vuelta de la pesca), in which he paints a daily scene of oxen pulling the boats to the seaside.



By the way, La Casa dels Bous, located on Pescadores St. in the sailor neighborhood of the Cabañal, was used to shelter the animals immortalized in this painting. It is said that Sorolla used this building as a studio and kept his paintings there. For a long time, this building was in a serious state of neglect until the association "La Fábrica del Sol" recovered it to become a self-managed cultural space renamed "Atelier dels Bous".


TO CLAIM THIS VIRTUAL CACHE

To claim this Virtual cache we propose a procedure as triple tribute to the figure of Joaquín Sorolla:

Firstly, you will have to go to La Malvarrosa Beach, a place that had great relevance in the Valencian painter’s work, as already explained in the listing, and then you must go to the coordinates of the Virtual cache. After that, we move into the second step of the homage since there you will find a fountain with a sculpture representing a fishing sailboat (like those appearing in some of his paintings).

Once there, in order to log the cache as "Found it", you will have to take a picture showing the fountain and a drawing of your avatar and your nick with La Malvarrosa Beach in the background. And here is the third step of the tribute to this famous painter: the drawing of your avatar must be painted or drawn by yourself. It must be a hand-painted; impressions or other technical reproductions are not acceptable. We do not expect the quality and finish of a Sorolla’s canvas, but we insist that they will only be valid if they are drawn or painted by hand.

The photo must be attached to the cache log.

Este Virtual está dedicado al pintor valenciano Joaquín Sorolla (1863-1923), figura capital de la pintura española y uno de los grandes maestros del Impresionismo a nivel mundial.

Sorolla fue un "poeta" de la luz y el color. El artista levantino encumbró a la ciudad de Valencia dedicándole gran parte de su obra. Muchos de sus cuadros retratan lugares conocidos de la urbe.

Sorolla captó como nadie el reflejo del sol en el Mediterráneo. El pintor pasaba temporadas estivales en una casa en El Cabañal, cerca de la Playa de la Malvarrosa. Esta última fue el escenario elegido en muchos de sus lienzos: “Playa de Valencia con luz matinal”, “El pescador”, “Corriendo por la playa”, entre otras.





Pero si tuviéramos que elegir una de sus creaciones, ésta sería “Las tres velas”, donde homenajea la dura vida en el mundo de la pesca de las mujeres de la época: trabajadoras y, a la vez, encargadas de la crianza de la prole.



También queremos dedicar un párrafo a otra de sus obras cumbre: “La vuelta de la pesca”, donde pinta una escena cotidiana de bueyes tirando de las barcas hasta la orilla del mar.



Por cierto, La Casa dels Bous, situada en la Calle Pescadores en el marinero barrio valenciano del Cabañal, se usaba para dar cobijo a los animales inmortalizados en este último óleo. Se cuenta que Sorolla utilizaba este edificio como taller y guardaba allí sus cuadros. Durante mucho tiempo, este edificio se encontró en estado de abandono hasta que la asociación “La Fábrica del sol” lo rescató para convertirlo en espacio cultural autogestionado rebautizado como “Atelier dels Bous”.



REGISTRO DEL CACHÉ

El procedimiento para el registro está planteado como un homenaje triple a la figura de Joaquín Sorolla.

En primer lugar, habrá que acudir a la Playa de La Malvarrosa, que como ya hemos explicado tuvo gran relevancia en la obra del pintor, y dirigirse a las coordenadas del Virtual. Pasamos a la segunda parte del tributo, ya que allí encontraremos una fuente con una escultura que representa un barco de vela pesquero como los que aparecen en algunos de sus cuadros.

Una vez allí, para poder hacer el log del caché como “Encontrado”, tendrás que tomar una fotografía en la que se muestre la fuente referida y un dibujo de tu avatar junto a tu nick con la Playa de La Malvarrosa al fondo. Y he aquí el tercer capítulo del homenaje al ilustre pintor: el dibujo de tu avatar debe estar pintado o dibujado por ti. Ha de ser un dibujo realizado a mano; no valen impresiones o técnicas similares. No pretendemos que el acabado sea propio del mismísimo Sorolla, pero insistimos en que sólo serán aceptados si son dibujados o pintados a mano por el geocacher que registra.
La foto deberá adjuntarse en el log del caché.
