“…Manto fu, che cercò per terre molte;
poscia si puose là dove nacqu’io;
Mantova come Camelot, Mantova magica e misteriosa…
Piccola e ben disegnata Mantova è innanzitutto
mondo seppero riempire di opere preziosissime;
Mantegna, Pisanello, Giulio Romano,
Leon Battista Alberti, Fancelli,
di epoca Matildica venne edificata attorno all’anno 1000
corti giardini e giardini pensili.
seguendo specifiche simbologie magiche e alchemiche.
Da non dimenticare anche una visita al
Palazzo Te
e figlio dell’illustrissima marchesana, Isabella d’Este,
in ogni periodo dell'anno.
Buon divertimento !
"... Mantle was, which he sought for many lands;
then he came to where I was born;
whence I like a little that you m'ascolte ... "
This is how Dante tells about Virgil's mouth in his
"Divine Comedy"
the history of the foundation of the city by the indovina Manto.
Mantua founded by a witch therefore,
Mantua as Camelot, magical and mysterious Mantua ...
But what does Mantua have to do with Camelot?
To this question only one is the answer ...
Come to Mantua and live it, enter its palaces
and get lost in its narrow streets and alleys,
stop at a tavern and taste the refined
cooking his rich past.
From the Etruscans to a sumptuous Renaissance
listen to his story full of mysticism and magic.
Small and well-designed Mantova is first and foremost
an original miscellany of history and art.
The city imposes itself on the visitor above all as a treasure chest
of art treasures that famous names in
world knew how to fill with precious works;
Mantegna, Pisanello, Giulio Romano,
Leon Battista Alberti, Fancelli,
Leonardo da Vinci, Titian,
Ariosto the Tasso, the Aretino.
These are just some of the past characters
from Mantua that increased its undisputed cultural dignity
but the list is still long and will leave even the most skeptical people amazed.
Mantua, an ancient city has its origins
even before the Etruscan period
but it was in the communal age that it acquired its connotation
of a fortified city with important medieval buildings.
At the Municipal period and the short period of domination
of the Bonacolsi date back to the
the Bencolosi Palace
in addition to various other towers that were part of the family tower houses
more powerful than the city, like that one
of the Gabbia, of the Gambulini, of the Zuccaro.
In its first periphery la
Church of Gradaro
remember the place where he was martyred centuries before,
by beheading,
the Roman centurion Longinus, while the Rotunda of San Lorenzo,
from the Matildic period it was built around the year 1000
(on the remains of an ancient Roman temple dedicated to Diana)
to remember the miracle of finding the Sacred Blood of Jesus,
long lost.
However, Mantova reaches its maximum splendor below
the long domination of the Gonzagas (1328-1707).
Symbol of the passage, from common to lordship is the
Ducal Palace
one of the most extensive and elaborate palaces of Italy that it contains
in itself around 950 between rooms and rooms with numerous squares,
short gardens and hanging gardens.
Don't miss the splendid
Garden of the Simple
with its ancient herbs and its arranged plants
following specific magical and alchemical symbols.
Do not forget a visit to
Palazzo Te
Commissioned by Federico Gonzaga, first duke of Mantua
and son of the illustrious Marquis, Isabella d’Este,
as a villa of pleasures and entertainment.
A gift for his lover Isabella Boschetti with whom he lived
an intense love opposed by the powerful mother.
It was built between 1525 and 1534 on a project
by Giulio Romano who also took care of the decorations
interior and frescoes. Imposing and famous
is the Room of the Giants that recreates the episode
of the attempt to hunt the gods
by Giants and Titans from Mount Olympus.
Also worth a visit
Belfiore Gardens
The gardens of Belfiore is one of the magical places of Mantua
at any time of the year.
The gardens overlook the Mincio
which forms the upper lake of Mantua,
in the center a cultivation of flowers
of unique and huge lotus that was planted at the beginning of the twentieth century.
In 2002, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary,
in the square in front of the Valletta di Belfiore il
Municipality of Mantua carried out the
reconstruction of the memorial monument of the sculptor
Pasquale Miglioretti.
Finally a passage from
Piazza Virgiliana
is a vast green area of the city of Mantua desired
in 1797 by the French general De Mollis in order to honor
the Latin poet Virgil,
it was built on the initiative of the general 21 March 1801.
It consisted of a tall column on top of which was placed
a bronze bust of the poet, by Giovanni Bellavite.
Its location was at the center of Piazza Virgiliana
according to the project of the architect Pozzo.
