Súťaž

Urbanistická súťaž

V roku 1962 bola vypísaná verejná anonymná urbanistická súťaž. Víťazné projekty mali prezentovať silu a životaschopnosť nastoleného socialistického zriadenia¹¹. Jeden z cieľov bolo určiť najvhodnejšie miesto pre budovu rozhlasu v pôdoryse mesta. Ako najvhodnejšie bolo vybrané miesto ohraničené ulicami Radlinského, Štefanovičovou, Žilinskou, Belopotockého a Fazuľovou¹². Poskytlo vhodné priestorové podmienky, hlukové pomery, zároveň nízky rozsah asanácie a vyvolaných investícií¹⁷. Konkrétny návrh podoby budovy rozhlasu prijatý nebol, ale bolo odporučené zorganizovať ďalšiu architektonickú súťaž.

Architektonická súťaž

Súťaž sa uskutočnila v priebehu roku 1963 a vypisovateľ lokalizoval budovu na začiatku priečnej osi medzi Belopotockého a Škovránčou ulicou. Zúčastnilo sa 16 riadnych a jeden mimosúťažný projekt. Ani táto súťaž nepriniesla konečnú podobu budovy. V tej dobe to nebolo vzhľadom na spoločenské pomery obvyklé. Porota sa pretransformovala na "ideovú radu" a ďalej hľadala výrazný návrh budovy Československého rozhlasu¹⁸.

Výber investora

Investor spolu s ideovou radou nakoniec vybral návrh autorského kolektívu arch. Štefana Svetka.

Výstavba

Dodávateľ stavby Stavoindustria Bratislava začal s prípravnými a sanačnými prácami v auguste 1968³⁰. V dôsledku zlej koordinácie subdodávateľov dochádzalo k častým úpravám už realizovaných konštrukcií, čo sa nepriaznivo odzrkadlilo na rozpočte a časovom harmonograme. V období rokov 1977 až 1979 nebola splnená ani jediná činnosť zapísaná v ročnom pláne. To posunulo odovzdanie objektu z roku 1980 na rok 1983³². Nedostatky v kvalite výstavby, hlavne zatekanie strechy, nepriaznivo ovplyvňovali inštalácie technológií. Mnohé boli celkom alebo čiastočne zničené dažďovou vodou³³.

Rozpočet

Výdavky prekročili očakávané objemy tak, že sa menila ich metodika výpočtu a nezarátali sa do nich mzdy zamestnancov³⁴. Skutočné náklady vzrástli z úplne prvých odhadov 225,5 mil Kčs na 1275 mil Kčs. Asi 42% objemu išlo na nahrávacie štúdiá a koncertné sály, 29% na samotnú výstavbu budovy. Náklady na výstavbu štúdií boli 9x vyššie ako pôvodne odhadované³⁸.

Architektúra

Lokalizáciu budovy Slovenského rozhlasu ovplyvnilo nielen Námestie slobody, ale aj Americké námestie, o ktorých sa uvažovalo ako o novom Hlavnom námestí. V tom zmysle mala vzniknúť 24 metrov široká mestská trieda, z ktorej nakoniec zostala iba idea tzv. "priečnej osi", akejsi línie, ktorú mali zvýrazňovať monumentálne solitérne objekty⁴⁶. Návrh obrátenej pyramídy mal priniesť v náročnom mestskom priestore tvorivé obohatenie, ktoré však logicky vyplývalo i z budúcej prevádzky rozhlasového objektu. Oproti súčasnej podobe mala vtedy len 5 podlaží a zároveň tu absentoval strešný blok pre výpočtovú techniku. Vonkajší oceľový kôš vo forme diagonálnej konštrukčnej sústavy predsunutej pred fasádou bol súčasťou návrhu od začiatku. Objekt bol navrhnutý s jedným centrálnym nástupom. Vstupné priestory s koncertnými štúdiami a reštauráciou mali byť prístupné verejnosti ako občianska vybavenosť⁵⁷. Neujasnenosť funkcie mestskej "priečnej osi" viedla k viacerým funkčným zmenám. Zo zelenej mestskej triedy sa stala mestská dopravná tepna. Z tichého prostredia sa razom stalo hlučné a autori museli zmeniť koncept rozhlasovej podnože kvôli ochrane proti hluku. Z občianskej vybavenosti sa ustúpilo a terasy okolo objektu sa verejnosti zneprístupnili. Tvar obrátenej pyramídy okrem výrazného architektonického pôsobenia zamedzuje i jej nežiaducemu prehrievaniu v letných mesiacoch⁵⁸. Ikonotvorným prvkom budovy je nepochybne jej prevádzková časť - rozhlasová pyramída. Diagonálna samonosná oceľová konštrukcia (či exoskelet) vytvára high-tech fasádu upletenú do podoby koša, v ktorom je uložená obrátená 6-stupňová pyramída⁶³. Budova rozhlasu predstavuje vzburu architektov proti vtedy zaužívanej stavebnej produkcii, ktorá v priemyselnom rozmere budovala prefabrikované panelové sídliská. Budovou Slovenského rozhlasu autori rovnako dokazovali i akúsi skrytú revoltu proti vtedajšej vládnej moci. Súdobá kritika hodnotila celkovo architektonický koncept veľmi pozitívne. Lumík Lýsek napísal: "Som toho názoru, že budova je odvážnym a tvorivým výbojom zároveň, ale nie bezhlavou odvahou a výbojom pre výboj"⁶⁶.

Interiér

Najpodstatnejší dôsledok dohora sa rozširujúcej stavby je, že vďaka postupnému narastaniu jej objemu vzniká vo vnútri budovy voľný priestor⁶⁵. V prípade rozhlasovej pyramídy je čiastočne vyplnený ďalšou, vnútornou pyramídou, zavesenou na železobetónovom jadre, kopírujúc svojím tvarom interiérovú formu vonkajšej pyramídy. Obe pyramídy spoločne modelujú šikmé átrium a vytvárajú architektonicky veľmi sugestívny priestor v strede budovy, ktorý je jediný svojho druhu na svete. Tento priestor tiež pomáha prirodzenému prúdeniu vzduchu a dovoľuje dennému svetlu preniknúť hlboko dovnútra budovy. V centrálnom priestore, vo vnútornej pyramíde, sú umiestnené všetky citlivé prevádzky rozhlasu - vysielacie štúdiá, fonotéky a diskotéky, ktorým vonkajšia pyramída (tvorená z redakcií) zabezpečuje ochranu pred nežiadúcim hlukom a vibráciami z exteriéru. Mohutná rozhlasová podnož chráni vnútorné prevádzky výrobných, nahrávacích štúdií a koncertných sál. V strede rozľahlých strešných terás podnože sa nachádza do exteriéru otvorené átrium, z ktorého centra vyrastá na ôsmich pilieroch a z kmeňa jadra rozhlasová pyramída. Odtiaľ sa vstupuje do srdca budovy, kde sa nachádza koncertná sála číslo 1, postavená štýlom "dom v dome", zavesená na vonkajšom plášti na oceľových pružinách. Vďaka tomu je hlavná sála považovaná za jednu z akusticky najlepšie navrhnutých v Európe aj vo svete. V koncertnom štúdiu číslo 1 je inštalovaný organ od Hudobných nástrojov Krnov. Má 4 manuály, 83 registrov a 6373 píšťal, čo ho robí najväčším organom na Slovensku. Prispieva k vyzneniu celej koncertnej sály.

História Československého rozhlasu

• prvé vysielanie sa uskutočnilo 28.10.1919 z Prahy
• pravidelné vysielanie sa začalo 18.5.1923 z Prahy. Československá republika sa stala druhou Európskou krajinou s pravidelným rozhlasovým vysielaním.
• prvé rozhlasové prijímače na Slovensku sa objavujú asi v roku 1924
• 1925 vysielanie v jazykoch menšín
• 1926 vznikli štúdiá v Brne a Bratislave, 1927 Košice, koncom 20. rokov v Ostrave, 1936 v Banskej Bystrici
• v roku 1939 sa podnik rozpadol na Českú a Slovenskú časť, v roku 1948 sa znovu zlúčil
• v auguste 1944 sa ohlásil Slobodný slovenský vysielač s povstaleckými výzvami. Pracoval do 27.10.1944. V decembri 1944 bola do Bystrice presťahovaná Prešovská pobočka, ktorá pracovala do konca januára 1945.
• 21.8.1968 obsadili rozhlasové štúdiá vojská Varšavskej zmluvy, vysielanie pokračovalo z utajovaných provizórnych štúdií
• 1.1.1993 vznikol znova Slovenský rozhlas
• 1.1.2011 sa zlúčil spolu so Slovenskou televíziou do RTVS

Povinná úloha

Odfoťte sa pred obrátenou pyramídou tak, aby ste vyvorili trojuholník, či už obyčajný alebo obrátený pomocou rúk alebo nôh. Fotografia nemusí ukazovať vašu tvár, ale v pozadí musí byť vidno budovu Slovenského rozhlasu. Jedna fotografia - jeden log, skupinové fotky nebudú uznané.

Pozor: fotka musí byť urobená na súradniciach kešky. Nie na druhej strane cesty, nie o 200 metrov ďalej, nie z druhej strany budovy. V prípade sporov rozhodnú súradnice z EXIF dát fotky.

Urbanistic-architectural competition for the location of the Czechoslovak Radio Building in Bratislava

The competition was announced in 1962 and it was public and anonymous. It was supposed to contribute to the development of stagnant civil engineering in the country. The winning designs were to present the socialist power not only in our country but also abroad¹¹. This competition was supposed to determine the most suitable location of the building in the ground plans of the city. The jury came to conclusion, that it was necessary to reserve a place in the city centre located around the following streets: Radlinského, Štefanovičová, Žilinská, Belopotockého and Fazuľová¹². The selected area provided a sufficient spatial possibilities for the development. Number of other factors were considered - noise rate, economic impact with the respect to the demolition, necessary investments for roads and others. Concerning the question about the appearance of the building, the jury recommended to continue with the next architectural-urbanistic competition¹⁷.

Architectural-urbanistic competition for the building of the Czechoslovak Radio in Bratislava

The competition was realized in 1963 and thanks to the first stage, the location was precisely defined in the structure of the city in a significant area of the beginning of the transverse axis between the Belopotockého street and the Škovránčia street¹⁸. Nor the second competition found the appropriate shape of the future Radio building²⁰. The jury was transformed to the "idea committee". For those times it was unacceptable not to choose any of the designs from the competition. In 1964, a team of architects around Štefan Svetko came up with the idea to build the new Radio building as the upside-down pyramid and the idea committee agreed and recommended it to the investor²¹.

Construction process

The general constructor, Stavoindustria Bratislava, began with preparation and demolition processes in August 1968³¹. As a consequence of a bad sub-constructors coordination, there were very often changes of the implemented constructions on a building site, which unfavorably influenced the budget as well as the construction process schedule³². In the period between the years 1977-1979, no activity stated in the annual plan was fulfilled. That caused another delay in a completion of the building of 1980 to June 1983. The imperfections in the construction, most significant was leakage, influenced the phases of plumbing works of the broadcasting technologies. Many of the recording and transmitting technologies were completely or partially damaged by rain³³.

Budget

The total costs for the construction exceeded the plan so much, that the government tried to cover it by a methodology change in the budget creation. The real expenses compared to the very first 225,5 million rose to 1275 million Czechoslovak Crowns³⁵. Approximately 42% of the budget was spent on the recording studios and concert halls. The building construction was other 29%. The costs of the studios and concert halls were 9 times higher than planned³⁸.

Architecture

The location of the Slovak Radio building was not influenced only by the Freedom Swuare but also by the American Square. They were to meant to form this square as the "New Main Square"⁴⁶ In that sense the mentioned axes were supposed to be intersected by 24 meters wide city road. It has never been implemented, but it left an idea to create a "transverse axis" with monumental solitaire objects, that were supposed to articulate the axis⁴⁷. The design of the upside down pyramid was supposed to enhance the shape in the architecture of that city area, which resulted from the operational requirements of the future broadcasting structure as well. In comparison with the present structure of the building, it had only 5 floors and there was no roof part for the computer techniques. The famous steel basket - self supported exoskeleton was a part of the design since the first version. The entrance premises with three concert studios, equipped entrances and a restaurant were supposed to be accessible for public and serve as the civic amenity⁵⁶. The undefined function of the transverse axis led to the various "functional changes". The green boulevard was transformed to a city roadway⁵⁸. A quiet location suitable for radio broadcasting changed to a noisy one, which was totally unsuitable for the radio broadcasting. Due to protection against noise, the Radio tie closed to itself. The tie expresses the contact with the exterior only through minimal amount of openings⁵⁹. Iconic feature of the building is its operating part - the Radio pyramid. Diagonal self-supporting steel structure (or exoskeleton) creates high-tech facade knitted into the basket form in which the equilateral six degrees upside-down pyramid is inserted. The shape of upside-down pyramid, besides the expressive architectural impression, prevents unacceptable overheating of the building in the summer⁶³. The Radio building presents the uprising of the architects against the architecture of those times which was about construction of the industrial block of flats built from reinforced concrete panels. By this building the architects also manifested against the government of those times⁶⁶. Critics of those times evaluated this architectural concept at very high level. Lumír Lýsek wrote: "In my opinion, the new Czechoslovak Radio building in Bratislava is courageous and creative avalanche, but not impulsive courage and avalanche for avalanche⁶⁷.

Interior

The most important consequence of the upwards widening building is, that due to its gradual increasing volume, enough free space inside of the building is created. In the case of the broadcasting pyramid, this space is filled with the second "inside pyramid" hung of the steel ropes anchored to the reinforced concrete centre. The shape and form of this inside pyramid copies the interior structure of the exterior pyramid. The pyramids mould together a "slope atrium" (pseudo-atrium) creating architectonically suggestive space in the centre of the building, which is unique in the world. It helps the natural ventilation and allows daylight emerging deeply into the interior of the building. All the important sensitive operations such as broadcasting studios, sound recording libraries of discotheques are located in the inside pyramid, where the exterior pyramid formed by individual editorial offices enables the protection of those studios against the noise and vibrations from exterior. The huge Radio tie protects the operations, recording studios and concert halls. In the centre of the vast roof terraces of the operating tie, there is an atrium opening to the exterior. From that trunk of the centre grows, on the eight pillars, the Radio pyramid. This is the public entry to the heart of the building, to the main concert hall, built by the structural principle of "the house in the house". The steel springs are anchored on the external reinforced concrete sheeting. Thanks to this unique solution, the concert hall of the Slovak radio is considered to be the one of the best designed from the acoustic point of view in Europe and even in the world⁶⁵. In the concert studio, there is an organ installed. The instrument was delivered by the company Hudobné nástroje Krnov. It has 4 manuals, 83 registries and 6373 pipes. These parameters make it the biggest organ in Slovakia. It contributes to the grandiosity of the whole concert hall not only for its modern disposition, but also for its artistic design⁹².

History of the Czechoslovak Radio

• broadcasting started on the 28th of October, 1919 from Prague
• a regular broadcasting began on the 18th of May 1923 from Prague. The Czechoslovak Republic became the second country in Europe with a regular Radio broadcasting
• the first Radio receivers in Slovakia started to appear in 1924
• broadcasting in other languages started in 1925
• other studios were open in cities of Brno and Bratislava (1926), Košice (1927), Ostrava (around 1930), Banská Bystrica (1936)
• in the year 1939, the Czechoslovak Radio was split to a Czech and Slovak companies and joined back together in 1948 after WW2
• During WW2, in 1944, the Free Slovak Transmitter started with broadcasting of uprising proclamations. It was operational until the 27th of October, 1944. In december 1944, the Prešov branch of the Slovak radio was moved to Banská Bystrica and it was operational until end of January 1945
• On the 21st of August 1968, when the Soviet occupation began, the Radio studios were occupied as well, so the broadcasting continued from secret locations
• the first of January, 1993 the Slovak Radio was separated again from the Czechoslovak Radio
• the first of January, 2011 the Slovak Radio was united with the Slovak Television as the Radio and Television of Slovakia (RTVS)

Finally - your task

Mandatory Task

Make a selfie in front of the reversed pyramid, and form a normal or reversed triangle with your hands or legs. Behind you must be visible the Slovak Radio building. One photo - one log, group pictures are not valid.

Attention: the photo must be taken at the cache coordinates. Not accross the street, not 200 meters away, not from the other side of the building. In case of disputes, the coordinates from the EXIF data of the photo will be used as a proof.

 

Voluntary Task

If you want to play a little bit more and make me happy, bring with you your own reversed pyramid - a triangle ruler, a paperweight in the shape of a reversed pyramid, a printed or drawn picture of the building. Make a foto of it with the Slovak Radio building in the background. You can log FI with that picture as well - you are free to choose between a mandatory or voluntary task.
