Geocache Description:

I'm doing this Virtual in memory of my Grandparents. My grandparents lived in the house below. Charlie Mallowes my grandad was the Lighthouse Keeper from 1969 till 1976. This was one of many places he served at. He also did Tiritiri Matangi Island, Mokohinau Island (Hauraki Gulf), Cuvier Island (Coromandel), Dog Island (Bluff), French Pass and finally here where sadly was his last as he passed away here 10 June 1976. My grandmother ( Lillian Malllowes) eventually moved to New Plymouth. She recently passed at the grand age of 95. As a child I grew up with many of their stories of their lighthouse lives. And what a life they had. Raising 4 children. My family have some hair raising and funny stories. My grandparents may have passed but their life stories will live on. Now you get to enjoy a virtual in their memory.

BASIC HISTORY

The Cape Egmont Lighthouse was first erected in 1865 on Mana Island, near Cook Strait. The Mana Island light was often confused with the Pencarrow light, so it was dismantled and taken to Cape Egmont in 1877. The light shone at Cape Egmont for the first time in August 1881. Fully automated in 1986.

TO CLAIM THIS CACHE

You are required to take a photo of the Lighthouse with you or something to do with geocaching items in the picture. You can do this at posted coordinates or anywhere in the area. But the Lighthouse must be in the picture. AND IT MUST BE INCLUDED IN YOUR LOG. Bonus points if you get the Lighthouse and mountain together. Enjoy.
