The domain...
The provincial domain of Hélécine is a Belgian leisure and seminar centre lacated in Walloon Brabant between Brussel and Liège. The main building is the abbay palace of the former premonstructed abbay of Heylissem.
The abbey of Heylissem was a monastery of premonstructed canons (Catholic canonical order, they have as their mission the apostolate as clerics but also as monks...), founded around 1130 by Lord Renier; The estate grew throughout the 12th and 13th centuries, the exploitation serves to maintain the parishes of the surroundings until the French revolution. In the 13th century, the duc of Brabant (and yes, again !) authorized the construction of a fortified enclosure.
Contrary to the 14th and 15th centuries, the 16th ant 17th centuries were very shaken by religious wars and the frequent passage of French, Spanich ou Dutch troops. The abbey, its parishes and farms suffered serious damage, plundering, sacking or burning.
Fortunately, in the 18th century, peace returned, and tha community could recover. In 1768, the architect Laurent-Benoît Dewez completely rebuilt the abbay, but i 1796, the religious had to leave the premises. The goods were sold, the wings were demolished, and the church choir was demolished to make way for a modern factory.
In 1862, the counts of Outrltremont, who had live there since 1919, sold the property to the province of Walloon Brabant. After further transformations, the castle was opened to the public as the Provincial Domain of Hélécine.
