Geocache Description:

****Important Notice*** This cache has been temporarily disabled due to road construction for the new park. It is estimated to be a year before the road is reopened.Palo Pinto State Park is one of the newest state parks in Texas. The park has 1,400-foot ridgelines, creeks, hardwood forests, rare birds, and a fishing lake. It will feature dark skies for stargazing, horse trails, camping, hiking and cabins. Recently the TX legislature allocated funds to start construction of the park but it is not officially open yet. The only area you can visit is around Tucker Lake which is owned by the city of Strawn and is open for fishing. This geocache is at Lake Tucker so it is OK to go there to retrieve the cache but you are not allowed outside of the lake area. The State Parks Department has agreed to the placement of this cache, letter is on file. The park was obtained by the state to serve Tarrant County and the western half of the Metroplex. The Texas Nature Conservancy found the property and help arrange for it to be transferred to the Texas Parks Department. The parks origin has a colorful history. It starts with a fatal shooting at the Mule Lip Bar (photo) in nearby Mingus, a town with a population of around 250 with somewhat of an outlaw reputation. Parsons & Copeland were drinking at the bar at closing time, Parsons refused to leave and started arguing with Copland. Copeland went out to his truck & got his shotgun hoping to scare Parsons into leaving. The two wrangled with the shotgun which went off hitting Parsons in the head. Although he apparently died immediately the bar tender & Copeland waited several hours before calling the authorities. Copeland was brought to trial and convicted of criminally negligent homicide, & was sentenced to two years in prison. Parsons family also sued Copeland for wrongful death and Copeland eventually settled out of court and agreed to sign over 1,330 acres of land to the Parsonses. The land would eventually be sold to the state of Texas to start the park. Cache is a square, cammo'ed container.
