This tunnel was built between the years 1846 and 1849 and is the longest stone arch tunnel in Connecticut. It is only wide enough to allow one car through at a time.
While constructing the bike trail above the tunnel the town wanted to remove the tunnel in order to widen the road then place a bicycle bridge above the road. The local residents loved the tunnel and fought against it. No one seems to mind the wait while cars take turns passing through the tunnel, even during rush hour.
