Geocache Description:

Background Information

The Castle at Oatley Park, resembling an 'old English ruined castle' was built during the Great Depression years (1929-1933) as part of an unemployment relief scheme. The castle is a picnic venue today but has previously been used as a kiosk. The view from The Castle looks across Jewfish Bay and down the Georges River to Como Railway Bridge. Along with this structure, significant developments took place in the park during this time including the building of roads, paths and lookouts.

Oatley Park was formed in 1887 when it was dedicated for Public Recreation by the NSW Government. Then known as Peakhurst Park, its dedication occurred during a wave of many public parks being formed by the Government including Centennial Park. Its name was changed to Oatley Park in 1922.

The top of The Castle wall was built in typical castle fashion with a protective tooth-shaped parapet for the soldiers to hide behind. The defenders could fire missiles through gaps, called crenels. The raised sections between, merlons, helped to shelter the defenders during an enemy attack.

Your Task

This is a simple multi for the whole family and shouldn't take too long. Some of the answers require basic maths.

Beside The Castle you will see an information board. Read the information:

A In what year did the council decide to build a 'beach house' in Oatley Park: 192? ?+1=A

Now walk to the bottom of the castle:

B Count the number of arches (doorways) around the base: ?-3=B

C Count the number of rectangular windows: ?+2=C

D Count the number of fixed tables inside: ?+4=D

Now walk to the rear and take the ramp up to the roof (read the Background Info if you need help):

E Count the number of crenels: ??-23=E

F Count the number of merlons (count the corners as 1): ??-29=F
