Geocache Description:

The original cache was stolen, the new cache is much better hidden and the coorinates have been updated. Since this cache is completely out of view, you will want to review the hint below.

The cache is northeast of Showlow, and begins at Pintail Lake (also called the Allen Severson Memorial Wildlife Area).

Directions: From Show Low, drive four miles north on AZ 77 and turn right at the signed entrance. Proceed approximately 1 mile on the dirt road to the trailhead and parking area. (N34 18.395 W110 01.824)

This wetland project was born in the late 1970s, when the U.S. Forest Service, Arizona Game and Fish Department, Show Low Sanitary District and City of Show Low came up with a joint venture to use treated wastewater to create a marsh ecosystem.

The result is Pintail Lake, a 47-acre wonderland for nesting waterfowl and other wildlife. Man-made islands provide a safe haven for ducks and other birds, where they can nest without the threat of coyotes and other land mammals. In addition to the numerous species of waterfowl seen here, Pintail Lake attracts such wildlife as deer, elk, antelope and the occasional bald eagle.

There were some doubts among biologists if Arizona's "desert ducks" would use the islands. There are doubts no longer. The number of ducklings hatched at Pintail increased from 9 to 2,819 in the first three years of the project.

Suggestion: Arrive early in the morning, for the best chance to view wildlife. Bring a camera, binoculars, and a snack, as you may wish to explore the area in more detail.

The cache is an ammo container; it contains a small American flag, two patriotic buttons, a multifunction calculator, an ‘I love the USA’ key chain, and a logbook.

This is the fifth cache placed in the White Mountains by CABA (Central Arizona Backpackers Association) located in Tempe, Arizona. (A non-profit community hiking club.)

Have a nice hunt.
