The Severn Wave Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mzebonga: It's been a few weeks since the event and all the trackables have been logged out.

Thanks to everyone who came and helped make this event so enjoyable and an especially big thanks to @Monski for agreeing to co-host with us. Hopefully, we'll be able to organise another one in the not too distant future and we'll see you then!

Happy caching!

Geocache Description:

04 August 2019, 09:45 - 10:45

We've stood at the geocache in Newnham-on-Severn and stared over at Passage Road on a number of occasions and have now decided that it is time for an event that offers geocachers the chance to wave at one another across the Severn.

Sunday, 4th August 2019 @ 09:45 to 10:45

This event will take place with two assembly points, one on either side of the the River. We're inviting cachers to join a party either near St Peter's Church in Newnham-on-Severn or near to "The Old Passage" at the end of Passage Road on the opposite bank. There will be a group of cachers and a logbook at both locations so we're inviting people to come along to see the Severn Bore and also to wave at each other as the Bore goes past (ie; "wave" and "wave").

Where Will The Meet Take Place

This event will be unusual in so far as we are inviting cachers to meet at one of two spots:

  1. Along the footpath leading past St Peter's Church in Newnham-on-Severn, overlooking the Severn - this is the Western and highest point and affords the best views over the River Severn but parking can be a bit tricky. If you're planning to attend the waypoint here, it may be worth aiming to be at least 30 minutes early to allow time to find a space! [Waypoint]
  2. At the end of Passage Road near "The Old Passage" - this place is lower and more exposed but probably offers the best view of the passing Severn Bore and better parking for up to approximately 20 cars (provided we don't get too many attendees!) Could be the damper of the two locations but may also offer the best access from the Cotswolds and Bristol along with the most onward caching destinations.[Waypoint]

We'd encourage attendees to bring any binoculars, telescopes and high-resolution zoom lenses because the two points are separated by more than 500m (and a good few metres of elevation too). Extra points to any cacher who can sucessfully navigate a drone camera between the points (but we accept no liability if it meets a watery end).

When Will The Severn Bore Happen

Based on the Severn Bore website timetable, we are expecting a 2-star Bore to pass by Newnham at approximately 10:14am (give or take 20 minutes depending on weather)

Bores are ranked between 1-star (least dramatic) and 4-stars (most dramatic) - we're expecting this one to be fairly modest and therefore not attract a lot of other muggle spectators, leaving the congregation points mostly for cachers.

While the Bore is not the purpose of the event, it will help cachers qualify to claim the Severn Bore EarthCache (Gloucestershire) (GCN6EP), if they so wish.
