The Abberton Snag is a huge old tree, no longer living but still standing. This cache location puts you in full view of the stunning Snag. There is a photo in the gallery of my 6 year old stood at its base to give you an idea of just how large it is. But why not come see for yourself!
In Ecology terms, a Snag can be either a dead or dying tree but it is always still standing. According to The Woodland Trust, "The tree itself has reached the end of its life; however its usefulness to wildlife is about to peak. Dead wood provides homes to insects, which are a food source for birds, bats and other small mammals. These creatures also take advantage of hollows or holes in the tree for shelter. In turn these smaller residents are food for larger mammals and birds like owls. Removing dead wood from woodland removes an important part of its biodiversity"
At GZ and the footpath between here and a nearby cache "The Way to the Snag" (toward Layer Road/Oxley Hill) can be very overgrown at certain times of the year, with brambles, nettles and thorns. The path may be rough underfoot at times, thanks to the local mole population. This footpath would be unsuitable for bikes. The terrain rating is based on these attributes.
If you decide to visit the Snag itself, please be aware of cows (with or without calves) which may be in the field and also be very wary of falling branches especially in strong winds. As stated earlier, this beautiful tree is dead and braches may drop off without warning.
