“Long May You Run” was written by Neil Young and recorded by the Stills Young Band, leading off the album of the same name which was released in 19AB. The song is actually an ode to Mort, which was Neil’s first car, a 19CD Buick Roadmaster hearse which finally quit near Blind River in 19EF, just as the song says. The subject was not significant when Neil performed the song at the closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in GHIJ.
Neil Young is arguably the greatest Canadian member of the Rock and Roll Pantheon, twice a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as well as an Oscar nominee in 19KL and was named an Officer of The Order of Canada in 20MN. Although he has lived in California for many years, Neil remains a Canadian citizen.
