Geocache Description:

Warren Gorge forms part of the Flinders Ranges.

The Flinders Ranges stretch over 430 km from Port Pirie to Lake Callabonna and are a classic example of a folded mountain range.

Formation of the ranges began about 800 million years ago. An ancient sea covered a large basin for about 300 million years, depositing layers of sediments on the seabed.

About 500 million years ago the basin sediments were folded and faulted to form a large mountain range. The mountains have eroded away but uplift during the last five million years has exposed the folded and faulted rocks to form the rugged scenery we see today.

The sedimentary rocks that are now visible include distinctive intervals of sandstone, mudstone and limestone that once formed the ancient seabed.
