Table setting or place setting refers to the way to set a table with tableware—such as eating utinsals and for serving and eating. The arrangement for a single diner is called a place setting. The practice of dictating the precise arrangement of tableware has varied across cultures and historical periods.
The basic rule is: Utensils are placed in the order of use; that is, from the outside in. A second rule, with only a few exceptions, is: Forks go to the left of the plate, and knives and spoons go to the right. And finally, only set the table with utensils you will use. No soup; no soup spoon.
Settings can differ for family dinners, holidays, weddings, banquets, semi-formal events, BBQs or formal functions
