Just an average cache, hidden in a classic geo tree. A nice and easy start to The Mamakating O & W Rail Trail.
About the land
The Open Space Institute protected this scenice trail and donated it to the Town of Mamakating for public use and enjoyment.
The Mamakating Rail Trail is part of a secnic network of trails tht runs along the historic O & W Railroad bed.
Efforts to conserve this property began in 2011 when the Open space Institute (OSI) permantly protected 2.6 miles of trail in Mamakating. This part of the trail links downtown Wurtsboro with the Wurtsboro Ridge, Roosa Gap, and the Shawangunk Ridge state forests.
In 2016, OSI donated the land to the Town of Mamakating, and it now forms an integral part of the Town's extensive rail trail and canal trail network. Osi's acquistion and subsequent donation of the property has allowed for the developmant of a nearly 8 mile long loop for hikers, walkers, bikers, and other recreational users.
The Mamakating Rail trail connects to the D & H Canal Tow path, The Long Path, the Shawengunk Ridge trail, and the O & W Main line. As a unified system of trails, it will link some of the most well known, picturesque, and historic landscapes in the state while turning historically industrial assests into public assets such as this liner park.
