Ce passage routier qui relie la Vallée de La Tarentaise à la Vallée de La Maurienne n'est ouvert que la moitié de l'année, en général de mai à octobre. Des panneaux en vallée vous informe de l'ouverture du col et es conditions de route.En hiver, c'est un point de liaison entre les domaines skiables de St François Longchamps et Valmorel. Régulièrement emprunté par le Tour de France, on y voit souvent des rallyes, meetings, ou réunions de véhicules anciens, on y rencontre beaucoup de motards.
