Castle Butte and Pompey Peak
Last year I approached Pompey Peak using this enjoyable ridge trail. Follow FR-20 about 12 miles up to the ridge (Jackpot Lake). The road is bumpy but clearance should not be an issue. I’ve provided parking coordinates for a connector trail that joins the Kickitat Trail. Hike the Kickitat for ¾ of a mile and watch for the sign marking TR-127 up to the lookout site. On the north side of the trail there are remains of a cabin supposedly built using the dismantled lookout cabin. Willhite provides a pretty good history of the lookout.
I found few artifacts from the lookout; broken glass, nails, cable and one anchor. I also found an interesting recording in a tin can under a rock pile on the summit.
The summit is small and finding a hide for a 50-caliber ammo can was a problem. I finally built a rocky nest in talus. Please recover well to avoid unwanted discovery.
