Sentinel Point is a prominent peak topping out at 12,527 feet on the west slopes of Pikes Peak. It's visible for miles and casts an imposing shadow over Horsethief Falls and Park.
It's a difficult hike, but there is a trail most of the way from Horsethief Park - follow the signs and bear right on 704C. Depending on your route, the hike may be between 6 and 9 miles round trip. But the vistas are so grand above timberline in the summer that the miles just seem to melt away...
The summit is a jumble of gigantic boulders. The last 20 or 30 feet to the summit are Class 3 (requires hands to climb). Be safe and follow the cairned route up the east / southeast side of the point. Once at the summit, enjoy the benchmark and then go find the cache a little to the south. The cache is directly under a 6-foot boulder with an unusual growth of orange lichen at its tip. See the spoiler photos for additional guidance. It's a long way to go to DNF ... take the spoiler photo!
