Geocache Description:

This cache is placed in accordance with theKern River Valley Camp Out 2019

Long before the dam was constructed, during the California Gold Rush era, there was a told called Isabella. The location was near to where the South and North Forks of the Kern River met. The old Isabella town is currently under water of the modern Lake Isabella. Steven Barton, the founder of the town, decided to call it "Isabella" after Queen Isabella of Spain. He wanted a feminine name apposed to other more rugged town names that were popping up around the Kern River Valley.

According to Hot Springs Country Old Isabella, by Bob Powers, "In a valley known for its rough and rowdy names like Black Gulch, Whiskey Flat, Bear Trap, and Rattlesnake Creek, Barton showed his individualism by naming his town...Isabella." His vision for a modest town did not come to fruition. No matter how lady like the name, Isabella was the rowdiest place around. Kernville residents called Isabella, "hell hole of the valley." The little town was a meeting place for ranch hands, prospectors, drifters, and all kinds of characters. The towns saloon, Bucket of Blood, did a what of business on Saturday nights. Card Games and drinking were favorite pastimes, second only to fighting and shoot-outs. So it followed that one of the first jails in the Kern River Valley was built in 1905 in Old Isabella. The same jailhouse still stands in Silver City Ghost Town in Bodfish.

This geocache blends in well with its environment.
