This cache is located near an an old Airway Arrow that once had a lighted tower and generator shed. These airway arrows were installed back in the 1920's and 1930's to help guide airplanes. The large concrete arrow at each location pointed toward the next arrow on the route and was used by day. The lighted towers guided pilots by night. These arrows/light towers were later replaced by other guidance methods. This particular arrow was on the San Francisco to Salt Lake Airway and was designated Becon 49B. The concrete arrow is still there as are the foundations for the tower and generator shed. The coordinates for the actual arrow are N 40o 51.103’ W 114o 26.414’. This arrow points toward another arrow on the north side of I-80 that has a Geocache by it also (Geocaching.com - "Show Me The Way"). If you get fired up about arrows like me then you may want to check out some other arrows with caches on Geocaching.com placed by others that got me started on finding arrows. Including a series "Humbolt County Arrows" located in Humbolt County Nevada and another series "Arrows Across Utah". Also lots of info on-line about these arrows.
The container is a standard size plastic ammo box. Box has a log and pencil, a travel bug that I hope will travel far, some information on airway arrows, polished rocks from Agate Hill in Utah and some Boy Scout memorabilia from long ago when I was a Boy Scout living in Japan.
Access is by a reasonably good dirt road from the Shafter exit on I-80 although I would advise caution if it has been raining a lot because sections of this road can get muddy.
