Geocache Description:

Wombeetch Puyuun

At the posted coordinates you’ll be standing in front of the grave of Wombeetch Puyuun the last member of the Liwura Gundidj tribe.  He died in 1883 and was buried in a boggy scrubby spot just below the Camperdown Cemetery.

A few months later James Dawson, a Scottish man that lived in Camperdown and was acquainted with the Aboriginal tribes looking after their welfare and was a legal guardian for them, returned from a trip to Scotland, only to receive the news that Wombeetch Puyuun had passed away.

He wanted to somehow acknowledge the extinct tribes.  He tried to raise the funds to have an obelisk erected.  But didn't receive one penny.  So out of his own funds he had the obelisk carved in Geelong and placed in the Camperdown Cemetery.  Then he applied to the Attorney-General, and received permission to have the body of Wombeetch Puyuun removed and reburied at the foot of the obelisk.
