St. John's Evengelical Church was organized in 1884. The original congregation was comprised of the ten German families who settled in the community of Western, which was founded the same year. Services were held in German language until 1942. There were 5 churches in Western at one time, but 2 of them merged with this church, then the name became St. John United Church of Christ in 1958.
