Geocache Description:

This cache is going to be archived on Monday 10th August

We are archiving all of our 100+ Yorkshire caches.
We'd love you to come and find any caches you can before that date.

Although we encourage you to take as much swag as possible before the caches disappear, please do NOT take the cache itself. Cachers are still trying to find our caches and, once we archive them, we're hoping to bring them in ourselves.

Please be aware that this part of the coastline suffers badly from erosion. For this reason keep a watchful eye at GZ on any children and pets.

The coastline here is formed from Staithes sandstone. As mentioned, it's being eroded. The underlying Redcar mudstone is the bedrock you can see exposed below surface level where the cliffs have been washed away.

And here, far beneath your feet the geology of the area is constantly being scrutinised. Boulby Mine uses a method of long-hole drilling to sample rocks up to 2.5km away from the mine itself. The rock samples they pull from the ground haven't seen the light of day for 260 million years. (To put this in context: the dinosaurs roamed the earth between roughly 245 and 65 million years ago.) It's from this sampling that they discovered the polyhalite mineral reserves underneath the North Sea that are now mined to help produce fertiliser.

Map of Staithes circular

This cache is part of a 3 mile circular caching walk which takes in the picturesque village of Staithes. The route follows footpaths and quiet country lanes. There is one steep ascent from sea level to the top of the cliffs. Other than that, it's pretty easy going. The Terrain level for each cache has been awarded individually. The Terrain rating for the entire walk is roughly 2.5 to 3, as it should be an easy stroll for a relatively fit person.
The mobile signal throughout the entire walk is very temperamental, so we'd strongly suggest saving the caches for offline use before setting off, so that you don't have to rely on getting a signal when searching.

Please don't give away in either your photos or your logs what the unique aspect of this cache is. We would like everyone to have the same surprise as you did.
But please do write about your caching experience and upload photos of the surrounding area, or yourselves at GZ. As cache owners we put out caches for your enjoyment and it's great to hear if they've been enjoyed and why. Conversely, if there is a problem, please do let us know so that we can correct it as soon as possible.
Happy Caching,
The Cachekeepers x
