The SGCB series is both for everyone and Scouts working on their GeoCaching Badge (leaders see OSM for activity info). There are 6 caches and whether you start at Crossways or from Burbush car-park, they are best done in an anti-clockwise direction to save more than a little back-tracking. It’s about a 3.5 mile walk round the series from one of the parking areas. The views from Dur Hill Down on a clear day go for miles.
“This cache is on Forestry Commission land and has been placed in accordance with the GAGB – Forestry Commission Agreement. As part of this Agreement, it is not permitted to seek the cache during the hours of darkness”.
GPS locations use Latitude and Longitude references. This system works best for anything global. But locally, other systems can work better and in the 1930s, the Ordnance Survey came up with the Great Britain grid system and this is what appears as blue lines on all OS maps. When we use maps to hike, this is what we use to route plan with.
If you were at a nearby site, a satellite might be transmitting "50.796061, -1.738773" to you, but the OS grid reference there is SZ184996, quite different.
The cache
Using an OS map, work out your grid-reference here. (If you have no map, you could use streetmap website and if you need help you can find it on the this helpful OS guide.) Then use a map to find out the direction from here of the nearby Trig Point.
If you're at SZ 0139 1923, go northerly to SZ 0144 1918 (about 30m on the path)
If you're at SU 0139 1923, go southerly to SU 0144 1918 (about 30m on the path)
If you're at SZ 1923 0139, go easterly to SZ 1918 0144 (about 30m on the path)
If you're at SU 1923 0139, go westerly to SU 1918 0144 (about 30m on the path)
If the Trig point is SSE of here, use HOLLY in the clue
If the Trig point is ESE of here, use OAK in the clue
If the Trig point is WNW of here, use PINE in the clue
If the Trig point is NNW of here, use SILVER BIRCH in the clue
PS Don't miss the views just 125m west of the cache if the weather is right
