What: |
The fifth Geo-vehicle "Show and Shine" Event Cache. |
When: |
Sunday 1st of September, 2019, beginning at 8:30am, should finish around 3:30pm. |
Where: |
At Cardinia Reservior Park, specifically at the published co-ordinates. |
Who: |
Absolutely everybody! You do not need to own or drive a vehicle to attend this event, but you will need a vehicle to enter the rally. |
Why: |
... do you need to ask? |
Ok, So what is involved?
Well, that's pretty simple. There are a number of different levels of involvement that you can choose from:
- Attending
Sure, you can turn up at any time (8:30am-3:30pm) and sign the log book, if you want.
- Join a team
Of course joining a team would make the whole experience a lot more fun. If you don't own a vehicle or you're a bit embarrassed of your ride, simply ask one of the other teams if they have a spare seat for you to tag along in!
- Enter a vehicle for judging
Oh, now we are getting serious! If you think your vehicle has what it takes then enter it into the competition! Don't be shy either, none of us are professionals, it really is all for a bit of a laugh!
Overall Geo-vehicle of the Year.
Open to all vehicles. Will be decided by a rally around the hills, this will NOT be decided by speed, but upon collecting "points" at various different waypoints.
Imagine the prestige, the fame and fortune of winning the Overall best Geo-vehicle of the Year! Also, the teams competing in the winning vehicle will have the honour of logging this event as a joint FTF!
For logistical reasons though, participation in the rally to win the Overall best Geo-vehicle, has to be limited to 25 vehicles only. Whilst you may be able to enter your vehicle on the day, if there are spots left, it is preferred that you register your intentions before the event by providing the required information on your "Will Attend" log, via a note on this page or by emailing me.
A Car Rally sounds AWESOME can you tell me more?
Of course I can!
How do I enter my vehicle?
The best way to do this is to give your details when you log your "Will Attend" log. Failing that, include it on a note to this page, or email me the details. You may be able to enter your vehicle on the day, but only if there are spots left.
Remember though that it is limited to only 25 vehicle/teams.
What details do you need?
The following details will need to be provided...
- A name for your vehicle
- The team members who will be in your vehicle
- The Year, Make, Model and Type of vehicle
- Your preferred start time (see the table of available start times below)
- If you are willing to take extra people along and how many spare seats you will have.
- Optional, but preferred: A photo of your vehicle.
What time does it start?
The event kicks off at 8:30am. The first cars will be leaving at 9:00am.
What exactly will we be doing?
Now that is to be a pretty closely guarded secret. It will involve travelling around the hills to various different waypoints, gathering information and objects to gain "points". Like last year, there is no circuit, as you leave you will be given a map and the coordinates of the waypoints. It will be up to you to decide which waypoints your team is going to attempt and in what order. Most waypoints will be drive-bys with plenty of room for parking.
What will my vehicle need?
We would encourage you to load up your vehicle with every conceivable item that you could possibly ever think that may be required for a geocaching hunt. Not having the right equipment won't mean you can't finish, but it will mean you might miss out on valuable points! Things required from previous years included
- jumper-cables
- budgie smugglers
- bicycle pump
- keys
- QR code reader
- water
- magnets
- screw driver set
- ....
What are the roads like?
To complete some of the the rally will require going down dirt roads. This is nothing that a low clearance 2WD car cannot handle with a reasonably skilled driver, unless it is specifically marked. There may be some slight corrugations and small to medium size pot holes. If it has been raining, there will be mud and puddles, so if you're precious about you're ride, you might want to stay away.
How long will it take?
Each team is given 4 hours to complete as many waypoints as possible. It is unlikely that all waypoints will be able to be competed in this time though so it will be up to each team to decide which waypoints they want to attempt. Each team needs to be back within 4 hours of their departure time. If a team is not back within four hours then 1 point will be deducted for every 5 minutes they are late so you will need to factor this in when deciding on which WPs you are going to attempt!
Is there anything else I might need?
You will definitely require a full tank of fuel, a writing implement and a smart-phone with fully charged batteries and a QR reader. It's probably a good idea to pack some lunch too. There are numerous other things that you may need to gain points, so just pack everything imaginable.
Are there any other rules?
There are heaps of other rules! I like to confuse you:
- Each vehicle must have at least two team members.
- No vehicle should carry more passengers than it is licensed to carry
- The driver of each vehicle has to comply with all Victorian driving laws and therefore can take no part in navigation of the rally (looking at GPS, reading maps, making decisions etc). He/she can only take instructions from passengers as to which direction to drive in.
- The Driver of each vehicle must be in full control of the vehicle at all times. The rally is NOT time based, all speeding laws must be followed, and obviously drive slower if the conditions require.
- Whilst every effort has been made to place the waypoints where there is plenty of off-street parking for multiple vehicles, waypoints must be passed if the road conditions or traffic does not allow safe stopping.
- The driver has complete responsibility for duration of the event for his/her passengers safety.
- Starting times will be staggered every 5 minutes between 9:00am and 11:00am. To get your preferred starting time, let me know when you want to start when you send us all your other registration details. This is strictly on a "first come first serve" basis.
- All other rules will be outlined to you at your allocated departure time.

That's it???
Almost, just some legal issues for you to consider....
As cache/event setter/organiser I cannot accept any responsibility for any problems encountered during the day, including motoring accidents, speeding etc.
Like all caches, it is entirely your choice to take part in the event. By setting out to this event, the driver is responsible for any third party action that may arise during the day. I as an organizer am not responsible for any actions that you take.
Wow, that is a lot of information! - So, who's coming along???
