Welcome to Lopness, a beautiful bay and also the resting place of the B-98 - a first world war German destroyer. She survived the war and the scuttling of the German fleet in Scapa Flow. It seems that after the war the B-98 was put into survice as a mail ship but in February 1920 she was destined for the breakers yard. Being towed by the Royal Navy a storm hit and the B-98 broke free and dfrifted into the Bay of Lopness. Over the years the ship was salvage and stripped leaving an eerie reminder of the events 100 years ago.
Best seen at low tide, there is parking space off the road, picnic benches and an information board for more details of the wreck. See also https://meanderingwild.com/posts/b-98-lopness-sanday-orkney for more details of the wreck.
The cache is a small canister with no pen. Take care on the road.
Thank you for visiting.
