Een runway (startbaan/landingsbaan) is een vlakke, brede strook land op een vliegveld waar vliegtuigen gebruik van maken om op te stijgen of te landen. Die kan zowel uit gras als uit beton gemaakt zijn. De lengte ervan moet voldoende zijn om om een volgeladen vliegtuig vanaf stilstand genoeg snelheid te kunnen laten maken om op te kunnen stijgen, of bij het landen voldoende remweg te bieden.
Er kan op beide richtingen geland worden, afhangende van de wind. Je wil altijd landen en opstijgen met tegenwind (wind op kop). Het hangt dus af van de windrichting welke baan actief is op dat moment.
De naam van de runway wordt gegeven in welke richting die gelegen is ten opzichte van het magnetische noorden, afgerond tot 10 graden. Bijvoorbeeld in Oostende heb je runway 08 en 26. Die liggen precies 180 graden van elkaar, wat logisch is, want het is dezelfde baan, maar kijkt gewoon de andere richting uit.

A runway is a flat, wide strip of land at an airport that airplanes use to take off or land. It can be made of grass or concrete. Its length must be sufficient to allow a fully loaded aircraft to accelerate from a standstill to take-off or to provide sufficient braking distance upon landing.
It can be landed in either direction depending on the wind. You would always want to take off and land with a headwind. So it depends on the winddirection wether which runway is in use at that moment.
The name of the runway has been given to a direction relative to the magnetic north, rounded to 10 degrees. For example in Ostend you have runways 08 and 26. It is exactly 180 degrees apart, which makes sense if it is the same runway, but just points the other way.
