Now known as Waihinahina Park, this park used to be the old Horokiwi landfill but is now a large open grassy area surrounded by bush and hills overlooking the horokiwi quarry. A great area for all ages to stretch their legs and walk their dogs. The park is dedicated to Dennis Duggan, a prominent member of the Newlands community who passed away in 1996.
There are some fantastic views to be seen on your way to the cache location but a few things to watch out for:
- It can be steep and slippery so be careful especially after rain.
- Some tracks will bring you close to a decent fall so keep kids close by.
- There are a lot of wild rabbits so if your dog is a hunter, he/she may disappear into the bushes.
If you're there during working hours, I recommend sitting back and watching the quarry workers move dirt around from the Quarry Lookout WayPoint. (You don't need to go here to get to the cache).
Enjoy!
