This is number six in this growing series and is placed very close to the cricket ground; in the warmer months you will be able to see matches not far from GZ. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN WRITING IMPLEMENT - THE LOGBOOK MUST BE SIGNED. Please be very stealthy, as this is a busy road, pedestrians are frequent and staff will be coming and going from the nearby office building. On match days please be extra vigilant as queues form at the turnstile.
Somerset County Cricket Club was formed in 1875 but it wasn’t until 1895 that it gained official First Class status. The trophy cabinet began to fill up in the 1970’s with various league wins. However, the County Championship still eludes this enigmatic team with 2001, 2010, 2012, 2016 and 2018 bringing runner up status. Many famous players have emerged from the Taunton dressing rooms including Sir Ian Botham, Joel Garner, Sir Viv Richards, Marcus Trescothick and current captain Tom Abell, who also captains the T20 side. As this cache goes live, latest news is that Jack Leach has been signed up for the England team that faces Australia in the 2nd 2019 Ashes test at Lords.
For those of you who who do not follow or understand cricket, here is a brief explanation of why this cache is called what it is. An ‘over’ is a set of six balls bowled to the batsmen at the opposite end of the pitch. If no runs are scored in a particular over, that is said to be a maiden over.
If you are interested in expanding this series and placing a cache near to your local cricket ground, please message me, OffTheRails, via this website to obtain a series number and use the ‘Maiden Over # -’ prefix when naming your cache and the explanation outlined above. If you can add a photo that would be great too. There is also a FB page, so do visit and ask to join.
