Here on the corner of Court Road you can peer down to see Mayfair Gardens, now a rather nice housing development but once the beating heart of entertainment. This was the home of the Top Rank Suite, one of a chain of nightspots and live music venues. As well as drinking and dancing, many big names of the time played here including The Clash, The Who, Freddie and the Dreamers, Nazareth, Squeeze and The Hollies. The club was renamed The Mayfair and sadly closed down in the mid 1980s, Also on this site at one time was an ice rink, and adjacent to that, the greyhound racing stadium.
This is my first cache placement since moving to the area, so I thought to discover something about the local history.
