Geocache Description:


The three TASTE OF THE PAST trails will connect you with Perth’s food-based heritage. Your search will introduce you to the rich history of Perth with a chance to discover some of the local history relevant to the food industry, areas and businesses that have represented it through the years. The trail will have particular connection to the businesses that supported this industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.  With the images of the shops below, you will be able to see how the architecture over the decades, but equally recognise all those elements that have stayed the same – and in some cases – even to the point of it being the same business.   

This Taste of the Past Trail 2 follows shops which are now hotels, pubs and off-licences.  The locations are throughout central Perth so stealth is required.  The final co-ordinates are:

The trail begins at a hotel.

The cafe next to the hotel is called Cafe F2

This hotel was one of the many Perth Co-operative Society shops that Perth had in the early  late 18th / early 19th centuries.

 

 

 

The second stage is at another hotel (hotel 2)

A = small circles in the window - large circles on the wall

B = the number of Highlanders holding guns

The original Salutation Inn and Hotel dates back to 1699, where it is thought that it began its origins as a Coaching Inn owned by David Murray I (4th Viscount of Stormont and Lord Scone) until 1754 when it was then know, as now, as simply The Salutation.  Bonnie Prince Charlie also held meetings here.

 

 

The thrid stage is  an off-licence

This building was once The Stormont Bar and the photograph shows one of the barmen standing outside.  Note that the small balcony is now gone.

This site was The Windsor Restaurant for a long time. As a business it was established in  1814 but only moved to this site in 1899  and prided itself on being on of the finest places to dine in Perth.
