Geocache Description:

This collection of caches has nothing to do with the Church Micro series in the UK. Given that the Australian 2016 census indicates that No Religion and Jedi Knight are the fastest increasing classifications of the optional religion question "What is the person's religion?" it is not surprising that there is surfeit of empty churches that have been repurposed.

St Cuthberts Anglican Church

The history of religion in South Australia is of the utmost importance in understanding the trend of social movements. The establishment of the various branches of the Christian faith, particularly through the building growth period of the late 19th century, is significant to the development of Adelaide's suburbs. In this case the link between a North Adelaide 'mother' church and this 1899 building provides guidelines for the growth of churches, and perhaps suburbs.

A former church building based on a simple rectangular floor plan and of simple design. It is constructed , on the Clifton Street facade, of random sandstone walling with brick quoins and surrounds to openings. other walls are of limestone rubble.

The church provides an important statement about the link of community and religion in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It provides, too, another example of the expansive period of population growth and building that was the 1870s-80s.

Section 373, Hundred of Yatala, was granted to John Bradford on 25 July 1838 and was apportioned to seven others between 1838-53. A small section was subdivided as North Ovingham in 1877, and by 1880, the eastern end of Clifton Street had been subdivided. The foundation stone for this, the first St Cuthbert's church, was laid in 1883 and the building finished in the following year. A day school was opened with the church and provided education for some of the local children. The rapid development of the parish meant the need for a new building and a committee was formed in 1913-14 to pursue that goal. The building was constructed in 1883 and was used for worship until the new and larger St. Cuthbert's was built in 1915 due to a large increase in the number of worshippers.
