Students stream into the many schools in this area in their blue and white colours, but standing out from the crowd are the maroon-coloured Huaqiao uniforms. The Huaqiao or Overseas Chinese school has a spacious layout in the heart of an area of low-rise housing, villas and small compounds; a striking contrast to the highrises all around, and also to the additional Huaqiao primary school campus built nearby in Taojin Xijie and opened to lower primary year students in 2018. The network of winding alleyways can be confusing and disorientating even to locals. Much of the Huaqiao Xincun economy is centered around educational functions, and as with some of the leading schools in the Dongshan area, a significant part of the real estate market is driven by people moving nearby so that children can attend Huaqiao.
In 2010 Guangzhou implemented hundreds of kilometres of 'greenways', often just painted bike lanes on walkways but around the Huaqiao school it was a pedestrian-only elevated walkway built above street level around the east and west sides of the school walls. The greenway was becoming dilapidated and was closed off for major repairs in August 2019. After an extended hiatus, construction started in 2020 and by November 2020 the full greenway platform up above the street was re-opened. The cache is located along this restored greenway.
