A silver bison tube is located near a pillar that marks the location of the Wildwood CCC camp, the first CCC camp in New Hampshire. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was a voluntary public work relief program during the Great Depression for unemployed and unmarried men.
According to the book, Builder of Men: Life in the C.C.C. Camps of New Hampshire by David D. Draves (Peter E. Randall Publisher, 1992), most of the men in the camp were from Massachusetts. The men did a variety of projects in the area, with their biggest job being the construction of route 118 from Woodstock to Warren.
The best parking is less than 1/10 of a mile past the pillar, in a gravel pull-off on the right side of the road when heading in. Cache is on the left side of the road when heading in.
