Geocache Description:


This collection of caches is based on the Church Micro series in the UK,which has over 12,000 caches.

Given that Adelaide is affectionately known as the City Of Churches it seems appropriate to have a small series hidden at historical churches.

This is a simple offset multi .Visit the Church to gain the final co-ords for the final which is a short distance away.

GOLDEN GROVE UNITING CHURCH

In1864 Capt Adam Robertson gave a site for a church on the nth west cnr of section 5458.

He donated the acre of land and a temporary structure was erected and used as a church and school from 1850 to 1866.

In 1866 a stone church was constructed on land diagonally opposite the first church at a cost of 552 pounds.

Rev Ralph Drummond laid the foundation stone on 24 th July 1865

Rev John Garener conducted the frist service in 1866.

The original church dimensions were"Length 40' in the clear by 28' in width ,height of the walls from ground 15'.Two rooms to be built at end for a vestry and meeting room.

Description---Three bay single storey building constructed of local stone with stone dressings and a corrugated iron gable roof .Facade [east]has a symetrical gabled porch with pointed pointed arch doorway to the front.Above the doorway is a tricuspid dedication stone which reads'June 24 A.D.MDCCCLXVI 

The gable is topped by stone coping and surmounted by a pointed arch belfry.

Nth and Sth elevations each have 3 lancet windows with diagonal glazing and the Nth side of church has been rendered.Modern extensions peoject to the Nth and Sth at rear.

 

 

Thuis was the first Presbyterian church in the area ,is one of the oldest churches in the area and has important associasions with the Robertson family and many local residents.

In 1977 with the Union of Methodist,Congregation and Presbyterian churches ito form the Uniting Church of Australia ,this church became a Uniting church as it is today.

 

To locat e the cache look slightly nth to a opark bench close to original co-ords and read the plaque attached,
