Geocache Description:

Thislocation is an excellent example of the effects of wind and water on the shoreline (bluffs) along the north shore of Lake Erie. This location has been chosen for its solitude, view and the several features which affect the lake and bluffs  in the area. This earthcache is the successor to an earthcache I had for many years on the Lake Erie shoreline east of Port Stanley which was named 'You Bluffed Me' which has been archived with the publication of this particular earthcache. "You Bluffed Me' no longer served its intended purpose and had been fenced off and was no longer accessible from the dead end road.Lake Erie is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and is composed of three basins known as the Eastern Basin extending east of Long Point. The Central Basin is located between Long Point and Point Pelee. Finally at the extreme western End of the lake the western basin extends from Point Pelee westward to the Detroit River. Strong winds from the west will significantly lower the water level in the western basin which can force ships to anchor in the Detroit River until water levels rise sufficiently to allow ships to transit the western basin. Depths in the central basin range from as little as forty feet on the westerly portion of the basin up to 120 feet to the southwest of Long Point. This earthcache is located on the north (Canadian) shore of the central basin. As there are three major basins in Lake Erie would you expect similar currents in each of the basins. Earthcache questions to answer: 1. Standing atop the bluff at the end of the road at a safe distance back of the drop off what direction is the near shore current flowing? Typically each basin in Lake Erie has a similar rotation of current flow 2. Assuming that Lake Erie has a surface elevation of 571 feet above sea level (174 meters)what is the height of of the bluff according to your GPS receiver stated in either feet or meters? Note: The height of the bluff will be the elevation shown on your GPS receiver minus the surface level of Lake Erie (571 feet/174 meters). 3. What was the wind direction as observed by yourself atop the bluff. Note: Wind direction is defined as the direction from which the wind blows.
