The pulp and paper mill at Millicent and Tantanoola began from humble beginnings in a paddock at Snuggery.
It began as a joint venture between the then "Australian Paper Mills" and "Cellulose Australia" becoming well known as "APCEL".
Under the state's Playford Government, the APCEL factory was built during a policy period aimed at developing the state's manufacturing sector.
Millicent Mill started up its first creped wadding machine in 1960 to produce facial tissue. Today the mill is our major producer of Kleenex Cottonelle and Scott toilet tissue, Kleenex and Scott facial tissue and VIVA and Scott paper towel products.
Tantanoola Pulp Mill in South Australia was commissioned in 1992 to produce bleached pulp from plantation radiata pine trees for tissue products, nappies, feminine care and adult care products. Oxygen-based bleaching was pioneered here as an environmental initiative. The mill ceased operation in 2011.
