Named Te Maru, "place of shelter", Timaru was originally a haven for weary MÄori travellers canoeing along the otherwise shelterless coastline. Briefly settled as a whaling station about 1838 by the Sydney-based Weller Brothers, Timaru's first European resident was whaler Samuel Williams. A large part in the area's pastoral and commercial development was played by George and Robert Rhodes, brothers, born in Yorkshire, England. They set up the area's first sheep run and freeholded 50 hectares of land on which Timaru's commercial heart is based.
Caroline Bay
Caroline Bay was once described as a âdreary and uninviting line of rock under a cliff over which was dumped night soil and rubbishâ.Â
After the construction of Timaruâs artificial harbour, currents created a sandy beach under the cliffs, inviting bathers and visitors. The Borough Council leased the new foreshore from the Harbour Board in 1902 and decided to turn the bay into a European-style beach resort. Tea rooms, a hot-water swimming pool and a band rotunda were built. A âsound shellâ (for concerts) replaced the rotunda in 1937. Later, a piazza was built to improve access to the bay from the top of Bay Hill. Christmas carnivals have been held at Caroline Bay since 1911, attracting thousands.
There is a seat
There is a view
But no cache ??
A great place to sit and enjoy the view out to sea,Â
Early settlers just may have come to this very point....Â
Maybe to observe what was going on out at sea in all types of conditions,
waiting for their loved ones to return from a day out on the water.
The coordinates will lead you to a good vantage point, to observe what nature has provided us, and what mankind has created
