The Cheviot Hills run from Northumberland over the border into Scotland, and in our opinion represent one of the most wildly beautiful parts of the county. The landscape is unspoilt and for the most part deserted, lending a wonderful remoteness to this atmospheric area. The Cheviots are favoured among walkers but also have their place in local folklore, from tales of fairies to villains!
One such group of villains are the Redcaps – a tribe of trollish old men identified by the red caps worn on their heads which are said to keep their bright red colour by being washed in the blood of their human victims. Redcaps are said to inhabit ruined castles and hillforts, or anywhere blood has been spilt or wicked deeds have taken place.

A quick stop off from the A1 to admire the local area. This spot has wonderful views over the town of Berwick, the North Sea and out towards the Cheviot hills if the weather is favourable. Keep your eyes peeled for fairies and trolls!
