Welcome to the new Lake Whelchel multi-use trail. This trail opened to the public on June 29th 2019. The entire trail loop is 7.5 miles.
This trail is part of the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail which commemorates the Revoluntionary War route used by the Overmountain Men while searching for British Major Patrick Ferguson and his loyalist forces. The Lake Whelchel Trail is also part of the Carolina Thread Trail, a regional network of trails and blueways the reaches 15 counties, 2 states and 2.9 million people.
This is a very beautiful trail, so please do your part to keep it clean. Cache in Trash out.
If you are planning on doing the entire loop, be prepared. Bring drinking water, a cell phone, and possibly a first aid kit.
