Lesson 8 - Images

Images have many ways to hide information related to solving the puzzle. This hidden information can be for lists (see Lesson 4), or more detailed data giving the coordinates or resources to solve the puzzle. Be sure to check images on the cache page, images the Cache Owner may have logged, or placed in the gallery, or the background image.

Some of the ways to look are listed below:
  • Check the EXIF data (this is metadata stored under EXIF or a comment code tab)
  • Change the filter levels
  • Magnify the image
  • Check the photo tag (this is done by holding the cursor over the photo)
  • Check the name of the photo
  • Check the file URL (each photo must be hosted on a website, therefore the URL name can be changed) this can be found in the address bar when you are viewing the photo.
EXIF data and other data can be viewed using many choices of on line programs. Sometimes you can place the image link, by clicking on the image, and then copying the link from the address bar, or downloading the photo to your computer.
SPECIAL NOTE on EXIF data. Geocaching.com appears to be removing some or all metadata on images uploaded to the site. On older caches, it still exists (See Lesson 10), but on newer caches, the clues may be within the photo itself. If you notice that a link leads you to another site hosting the photo, then you may still find metadata.

Example

The photo above has the last 3 digits of the posted coordinates in its description in the image gallery.
