Do you believe in ghosts? Visit Oakwood Cemetery in Austin and you just might. People say this graveyard is full of spirits that roam here, night and day.
Oakwood Cemetery was officially established in 1839, though it's believed that earlier settlers who died in a Comanche attack are laid to rest here, too. Sprawling across 40 acres, this place may seem quiet and peaceful to some visitors, but others experience a distinctly different feeling.
More than 23,000 people are buried here, but some believe that not all have moved on from this world. While some early grave markers are heartbreaking, other people who were buried here lie in unmarked graves. One such grave is that of Eula Phillips, a 17-year-old woman who was murdered with an ax on Christmas Eve in 1885. Some say that Eula roams the cemetery at night. It's thought that, because of her violent death, she's confused and doesn't understand that she's dead.
Another ghost that haunts this place might be General Thomas Green, a Confederate soldier killed during the Civil War. Some people claim to have seen a soldier wearing a Confederate uniform wandering amongst the headstones. They also claim to hear the hoofbeats of horses. General Green was a cavalry soldier, and was killed while charging Federal gunboats during the Red River Campaign.
Reports of children playing and laughing amongst the headstones are common, and there are certainly many graves of small children here. Some have seen an old man who wanders around in broad daylight, appearing to be lost, but then he disappears into thin air. Visitors also report cold spots, even on hot days, orbs showing up around some of the graves, and a distinct feeling of uneasiness in certain parts of the cemetery.
