The Presidio served as an Army Post for decades. But did you know, there were different posts within the greater Presidio, with their own sets of command and responsibility? One of those sub-posts is Fort Winfield Scott, the post created in 1912 to serve as the HQ for the Army Coast Artillery Corps & Artillery District of San Francisco. This post functioned as the HQ for all bay area Coast Artillery Posts until they were disarmed after World War II.
Fort Scott is now one of the few remaining areas of the park yet to be rehabilitated. Come by to enjoy the mission-revival architecture, catch a glimpse of the wildlife enjoying the retired parade grounds, and don’t forget to explore the coast to the West, filled with old coastal artillery batteries that soldiers would be stationed at Fort Scott to operate!
