La Storia
Il Giardino Botanico Carsiana venne fondato nel 1964 su iniziativa del dott. Gianfranco Gioitti, ideatore, fondatore e primo proprietario di Carsiana, farmacista e grande appassionato di botanica. Il dott. Gioitti fu affiancato inizialmente dal prof. Livio Poldini, studioso e profondo conoscitore della flora e della vegetazione carsica e dal dott. Stanislao Budin, anch’egli appassionato botanico. La visione alla base di questo straordinario progetto era quella di fornire uno strumento culturale ed educativo all’avanguardia per contribuire ad un uso corretto del territorio e delle sue risorse, permettendo l’interpretazione dei principali ambienti del Carso e le specie più caratteristiche della sua flora. Carsiana nasce quindi come strumento didattico destinato sia al grande pubblico che agli specialisti, oltre ad essere luogo piacevole e caratterizzato da elevati standard estetici. La sua impostazione era estremamente moderna per l’epoca: le piante, le collezioni vive, vengono presentate nel loro ambiente elettivo e non in ordine sistematico. Merita precisare inoltre che Carsiana è un Giardino botanico e non Orto botanico: la differenza sta nel fatto che in un Giardino, oltre a venir presentate le collezioni per scopi scientifici, didattici ed educativi, vengono curati ed enfatizzati anche gli aspetti paesaggistici, risultanti dalle interazioni delle componenti geomorfologica, vegetazionale ed antropica. Particolare attenzione viene quindi dedicata alla disposizione delle piante coltivate, alle infrastrutture per la fruizione (sentieri, luoghi di sosta) e ai “giochi” d’acqua naturali o, come in questo caso, seminaturali.
Anche la scelta stessa del nome, “Carsiana”, è emblematica della grande lungimiranza e modernità dei suoi fondatori: il nome stesso sta ad indicare un ideale collegamento con l’Orto Botanico Juliana in Val Trenta (Slovenia). I fondatori del Giardino sin dal principio ambivano ad una «messa in rete» del Giardino con altre realtà che superassero i confini nazionali.
Dopo aver acquistato il terreno, il dott. Gioitti curò personalmente l’allestimento e la manutenzione del Giardino Botanico; la sua guida appassionata e capace fu ininterrotta per quarant’anni, sino alla data della sua scomparsa nel 2009.
Il dott. Fabrizio Martini e il sig. Eliseo Osualdini contribuirono alla buona cura del Giardino e all’arricchimento floristico. Dal 1972 l’iniziativa fu sostenuta dalla Provincia di Trieste e nel 1978 il Giardino fu finalmente aperto al pubblico. Nel 2002 il giardino venne acquistato dalla Provincia di Trieste per poco più di 130.000 euro, con l’obiettivo di valorizzare il bene anche mediante una programmazione di più ampio respiro e di potenziare le sue funzioni in relazione alla conservazione del territorio e dell’ambiente.
Dal 1 luglio 2016, per effetto dei piani di subentro delle Province, la proprietà del Giardino e la gestione di Carsiana sono state trasferite alla Regione autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia.
Nel 2018 la Regione autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia ha istituito un Gruppo di lavoro con funzione di indirizzo tecnico scientifico per la gestione del Giardino, composto da personale interno esperto in materia. Il Gruppo di lavoro ha elaborato gli indirizzi gestionali e coordinato le attività di manutenzione straordinaria e di restauro storico-filologico del Giardino condotte nel corso del 2018, avvalendosi anche della collaborazione di eccellenti giardinieri. Di fatto il Gruppo di lavoro svolge le funzioni di quel Comitato scientifico che era stato fermamente richiesto da Gioitti, tanto da inserirlo come previsione nel contratto di compravendita.
Dal 12 dicembre 2018 il servizio di gestione di Carsiana è affidato tramite contratto esterno alla Cooperativa Rogos. La Cooperativa Rogos opera in sinergia con il Gruppo di lavoro regionale al fine di garantire il raggiungimento e mantenimento dei migliori standard scientifici ed estetici del Giardino.
Visite Guidate
Il Giardino botanico Carsiana è visitabile in totale autonomia, grazie alle cartoguide che descrivono gli habitat e ai cartellini identificativi delle specie botaniche. Per un'esperienza ancor più coinvolgente e didatticamente completa, è possibile prenotare una visita guidata o un laboratorio che permetterà di approfondire svariate tematiche. Dalla scuola dell'infanzia alla scuola secondaria i laboratori, svolti dal personale qualificato della Società cooperativa Rogos, forniranno ai ragazzi utili strumenti conoscitivi ed esperienze coinvolgenti che resteranno piacevolmente impresse.

History
The Carsiana Botanical Garden was founded in 1964 on the initiative of Dr. Gianfranco Gioitti, the founder and first owner of Carsiana, a pharmacist and great lover of botany. Dr. Gioitti was initially supported by Prof. Livio Poldini, a scholar and deeply knowlegeable of the Karst’s flora and vegetation together with Dr. Stanislao Budin, also a passionate botanist. The vision behind this extraordinary project was to provide an avant-garde cultural and educational tool to contribute to the correct use of the local environment and its resources, allowing the interpretation of the main Karst environments and its most characteristic plant species. Carsiana was therefore created as a teaching tool both for the general public and specialists, as well as being a pleasant place characterized by high aesthetic standards. This approach was extremely modern for the time. The plants, all living collections, were presented in their chosen environments and not in a systematic order. It is also worth pointing out that Carsiana is a botanical garden and not a botanical collection, the difference lying in the fact that in the garden, in addition to presenting the collections for scientific, educational and interpretative purposes, the landscape aspects resulting from interactions are also taken into consideration and the geomorphological, vegetational and anthropogenic components are emphasized. Particular attention is thus devoted to the arrangement of the plants under cultivation, to the infrastructure for the use of the garden (the paths and stopping places) and to the natural or, as in this case, semi-natural water features.
Even the very choice of the name, “Carsiana” is emblematic of the great foresight and modernity of its founders. The name itself indicates an sought for connection with the Juliana Botanical Garden in Val Trenta in modern-day Slovenia. The founders of the Garden from the beginning aspired to a “networking” of the Garden with other elements that overcame national borders.
After buying the land, Dr. Gioitti personally oversaw the preparation and maintenance of the Botanical Garden. His passionate and capable guidance was uninterrupted for forty years, until his death in 2009.
Dr. Fabrizio Martini and Mr. Eliseo Osualdini contributed to the good care of the garden and to its floristic enrichment. From 1972 the initiative was supported by the Province of Trieste and in 1978 the Garden was finally opened to the public. In 2002 the garden was purchased by the Province of Trieste for just over 130,000 Euros with the aim of enhancing the asset through broader planning and a strengthening of its functions in relation to the conservation of the area and the local environment. From 1st July 2016, as a result of the abolition of the Provincial administrations in the Region, the ownership of the Garden and the management of Carsiana were transferred to the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
In 2018 the Autonomous Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia set up a working group with a technical and scientific function for the management of the garden, composed of internal staff who are expert in the field. The Working Group has drawn up the management guidelines, coordinated extraordinary maintenance and the historic-philological restoration activities of the Garden conducted in 2018, making use of the collaboration of excellent gardeners. In fact, the Working Group performs the functions of the Scientific Committee which was firmly requested by Gioitti, so much so that it was included as a condition in the purchase contract.
Since 12th December 2018 the management service of Carsiana has been entrusted through an external contract to the Rogos Cooperative, working in synergy with the Region’s working group to guarantee the achievement and maintenance of the best scientific and aesthetic standards of the Garden.
Guided tours
The Carsiana Botanical Garden can be visited in complete autonomy using the map and guide which describe the habitats together with the identification labels of the various botanical species. For an even more engaging and educationally complete experience, it is possible to book a guided tour or a workshop that will allow the visitor to address the various themes in greater depth. From nursery school to secondary school the workshops, carried out by the qualified staff of the Rogos Cooperative, will provide students with useful cognitive tools and engaging, pleasurable experiences that will stay with them after the visit.
